The use of the surgeon’s knife is be
coming so general, resulting fatally
in such a large number of cases, as to
occasion general alarm.
Mr. William Walpole, of Walshtown,
South Dakota, writes; “About
three years ago, there came under
my left eye a little blotch about the
size of a small pea.
It grew rapidly,and
shooting pains ran
in every direction.
I became alarmed
and consulted a
good doctor, who
pronounced it can-
ucer, and said that it
*inust be cut out.
This I would not
J consent to, having
little faith in the
indiscriminate use of theknife. Read
ing of the many cures made by S. S.
S., I determined to give that medicine
a trial, and after I had taken it a few
days, the cancer became irritated and
began to discharge. This after awhile
ceased, leaving a small scab, which
finally dropped off, and only a healthy
little scar remained to mark the place
where the destroyer had he\d t ull sway.
A Real Blood Remedy.
Cancer is in the blood and it is folly
toexpect an operation to cure it. S.S.S.
{guaranteed purely vegetable) is a real
remedy for every
disease of the blood.

Wrong at First but Right at Last.
BY ONE WHO KNOWS.
When a man’s watch gets out
of fix
And no longer gives the time,
Then it is that that man kicks,
And breathes oaths not at all
sublime.
Forthwith he takes it to some
snide jeweler
And leaves it for repair,
And not another cent will he
spend on it,
Doth he solemnly declare.
Alas ! before two weeks are gone
His watch has stopped again,
This time he’s cursing only one,
On the snide jeweler does his
curses rain.
Next time quoth he, I'll go
around
To Daniel & Co’s store,
And there when a watch is fixed
and wound
It breaks down never more.

The Druckenmillers at the Opera
House Monday N.ght.
Monday evening the Druckenmil
lers, a celebrated musical troup of
twelve year’s standing, will give a
performance in the Opera House.
They come highly recommended by
both press and pulpit and lovers of
music and fun are promised a rare
treat. The Burlington, N. C., News
has the following to say concerning
Druckenmillers:
“Best I ever heard,” “Wasn’t it
good?” “I never laughed so much,”
“These and many more were the
expressions of those who attended
the concert given by the Drucken
miller’s at the Acadumy. A local
representative of the News was there
by a large majority and can testifiy
as to the truth of the above asser
tions. As each act was presented the
local made a note of those deserving
special mention and when the con
cert was over lie found he had marked
the entire program as worthy of
special notice, but for brevity we
will bunch the entire thing and say
it was one of the best and most en
tertaining concerts ever given in Bur
lington. The music both band and
orchestra, was of a high order. And
the songs and dialogues brought
fourth storms of applause every time.
We cannot compliment them too
highly and hope they will have good
houses everywhere.”

June 28, 1897.
The first cotton bloom of the sea
son reached The Ledger office a
week ago to-day. It came from the
plantation of J. Lawson Spake, one
of the best farmers in Cherokee
county. This is about seven days la
ter than last year's first bloom.
George Turner brought us several
cotton blooms Monday. George is
pretty early, but in [this case he is a
little behind, as we had one lust
Thursday.
J. R. Jefft-ries. col., of Wilkins-j
viile brought in a cotton bloom
Tuesday. Jim says he intends to
keep with his white neighbors as far
as practicable.
The mails -Mon lay evening brought
us two cotton blooms from enterpris
ing farmers in different sections of
of Cherokee county—one from the
plantation of A. L. Corry, Wilkins-
ville, and the other from T. M. Lit
tlejohn, ol Star Farm.
;\L R. Stuard brought us a cotton
bloom Saturday, the E'.Kh. Mr. Stu
ard is a hustling farmer, but there
are others.
Mr. M. D. F. Coyle brings a cot-J
ton bloom, fully developed. From
the number of blooms received up
to date it would stem that farmers
will not be us far behind as was lirtt
supposed.
Others who brought in cotton
blooms this week were Henry Corry,
col., W. M. Millwood, of Wilkinsvilie.
O. P. Hill, of Midway, and W. J. L.
<)ueen, of Maud.
We appreciate this spirit of enter
prising rivalry displayed by our far
mer friends and trust the season may
be such as to abundantly bless their
labors.
