Thomason, on Limestone avenue. Miss Augusta Georgia Pierson, of Converse College, stopped over in the city last week for a couple of days with her brother. Mr. Will Pierson, while enroute to Shelby where she and her mother will summer. J. A. Scruggs, of Ezell, paid us a visit Friday. Misses N'amesa Crawley and Maud Iloltzsclaw are the guests of Hr. and Mrs. S. B. Crawley. Miss Kate Foiger left Thursday for Easly, S. C.. where she goes to spend several weeks with relatives and friends. Miss Annie Surratt went to Spartan burg lust Thursday to attend Wofford commencement and visit * friends. She was accompained by Miss Hettie Magness, of Spartanburg, who had been visiting in the city. Col. T. B. Butler went to Columbia last week. He had business with the Supreme Court. Geo. D. Scruggs, of Ezells, was among the progressive Cherokee plan ters here last Friday. Miss Vivian Hollis of Cross Keys who inis been attending school at the Cooper Limestone Institute, is now spending part of In-r vacation with her cousin Mrs. A. B. Gaines, on Vic toria avenue. “Bliley” Johnson stopped over Sun day to see his parents and to shake- hands with friends, of whom he has a ho«t in this section. Rev. C. F. Felmont passed through the city Monday on his way home from Corinth where he preached the funeral of Mrs. Julia Crocker Sunday. Hr. andJMrs. J. Roddy Miller went to Ebenezer and Chester last week to visit their parents. Dr. Miller re turned Saturday but Mrs. Miller will remain in Chester some time*. Rev. Amos Clary, recently of Cam- pobellu, is home again for several weeks on a visit to relatives and friends. Mr. J. A. Daniels, a prominent jew eler of Newberry, visited nis son. Sam Daniels, on Limestone street, the past week. We are glad to have Mr. Daniels visit us and would be happier still to have him settle here. M. L. Ross, of Shelby arrived in the city yesterday. Richard Littlejohn aud Russell Sparks, of Asbury were in the city Tuesday and Wednesday attending the commencement exercises of C. L. Institute. Maynard Smith, Miss Annie and Hazel Wood left yesterday for Annis ton Ala., where they go to spend a while with relatives and friends. Misses Ray Macomson and Grace Whisonant spent several days In the city last week, on their way home from Jones Seminary, All Healing, X. C.. where they have been in col lege for the past live months. He is a hustler and as a commanding officer everybody re spects him, while off duty he is just simply Jim Bell. Every young man in town who can should join the mil itary. Church Notes. The Rev. Mr. Anderson will hold services at the Episcopal Church Sunday 2oth, at 2:30 o’clock. All are invited. There will he a special conference of the First Ruptist Church Sunday afternoon at 4 o’clock for the purpose of finally deciding on the selection of a lot for the new church. Cheering Cherryville. Dravtoxville. June lt».— vi vvj» some i-ruise. ( - of our earlier days. Friday morning, June 11th, found us in the beautiful and hustling little town of Cherryville, X. C., the land of onr earlier days. It offered us much pleasure to shake hands with our old friends, acquaintances and relatives and also to note the pro gress of the town since we last saw it. Among others from Gaffney in that town we find Ed. C. Burnett who is the efficient overseer of the weaving department of the Gaston county M'f’g. Co. which, by the way, is the second cotton mill for Cherryville in the last six years. Mr. J. M. Rhodes vamc *'» Cherryville about six years ago and started up the mill of the Cherryville Mf’g. Co. and with the push and a pluck for which he is noted has succeeded in showing to men of means that there is something in the textile business, so much so that the second mill is now standing up with J. M. Rhodes as secretary and treas urer. He is also secretary, treas urer and superintendent of both Mills. When the first mill was star ted up the population of the place was about loti or 2<iO now there is about three or four times that many J. M. Rhodes is to Cnerryville what H. D. Wheat is to Gaffney. All along our way we could see the marks of prosperity. Crops are splendid. We saw some of the best wheat we think that we ever did see and it being harvested at that by the nest of machinery. Some of the farmers say that they never raised better wheat and oats than they have this year. Wo are very glad of this for it will make bread cheaper and near home. After feasting and visiting around for about a week we turned our face and steps toward home, wife and children and ploded on in that direc tion though more fine farms along the King’s Mountain road till we come to King’s Mountain, where we intend ed boarding the Southbound train but found out after we got there we were just in time to he too late. So we had to Jay over until 1 While waiting for the train we took in a portion of the town and found it to be in a thriving condition. Cowpens, June It.—There was an interesting game of base ball played here Saturday between the Cowpens and Clifton teams. The score was 0 to 7 in favor of the Cowpens team. Berry Camp (col) was killed here yesterday at the negro Methodist church. Magistrate W. R. Tanner empaneled a jury and held an in quest who found that Berry Camp came to his death by gunshot wounds In the hands of Millard Johnson and that Henry Johnson was an accessory. They were both committed to jail. Drs. Sims and Bates made the post mortem examination. Camp was struck with three balls ,one of which entered the heart. Millard Johnson was struck once in the chest Dr. Bates extracted the ball. T. N. and 8. D. Moore have their new brick store almost completed. It joins the one they now occupy. Miss Hattie Kendrick, of the t unny side section, is spending u while with relatives here. X. —. *••► •- The Smith-Koss Wedding Party. Mrs. \V. C. Carpenter, Mrs. It. L. Humes, Mrs. \V. H. Smith and Mr. Fletcher Smith, the Gaffney contin gent who accompanied the Smith- Ross wedding party to Clover lust Wednesday evening returned to the city Saturday. They report a most delightful trip. After spending Thursday at the hospitable home of the groom’s parents on Friday the entire party took a trip to the Cliffs above Hickory o.-er the People’s Line. The Pullman cur Ethel ,\as engaged for the trip. Music was furnished by a string band led by Mr. Realty Smith.
