The Presbyterian church is t(* be
congratulated upon the completion of
tin ir very beautiful church. It is an
evidence of tin ir energy an 1 pcrsor-
veranee. It will gi'*e an impetus to
the building of ot her beautiful houses
of worship. A country may well he
judged by its churches and school
houses. The cause of the Christian
religion should and must advance in
proportion to :ill other enterprises if
the county wishes to become great in
ail things. Let other b autifui
churches be erected and let the
cause ol the Man ot (rililea keep
pace with all else in the banner baby
county of the Palmetto State.
Day by day we note the increased
interest taken in Cherokee county by
the people who opposed its formation.
That’s rigln. It is manly in those men
who fought the new county to now
take a hand in m iking it the great
est county in tin* State. The friends
of the new county will do the proper
thing to receive them with open arms.
Give them a glad shake of the hand.
Let them feel that we bear them no
ill-will and we believe they wiil do the
handsome thnnr by their county.
Gen. John B. Gordon's lecture
next Wednesday night is indeed a
master piece. We would Ihve for
every one in the county to hear it.
We have heard it and we feel sure
that our people will go u.vay with
a better understanding of the cause
for which the brave men of the South
land fought. They would have a
grander conception of our Yankee
friends and ail will be made belter
and nobler for having heard it.
pro-
con
tents—embracing facts and fiction—
is varied enough to please the most
exacting. We note the following in
regards to Cherokee county :
•The people of the new county
of Cherokee, in upper South
Carolina, are rejoicing in their
good forture at having the last
state legislature grant a (hater
creating this new county. It is com
posed of sections of three old coun
ties—Spartanburg. Tnion an I York
—that lie along the waters of llrond
river, an urea containing tine rolling
farmlands imbedded with valuable
iron and other minerals an 1 aboun 1-
ing in water nower.
••'Ihe fhu is ting new town, Gaffney
City, at the center, has been made
the county seat. It is located *il
miles east from Spartanburg and .Vi
miles west from Charlotte, on the
Southern railroad. The extensive
five story cotton mills at Gaffney
City have been the leading cause of
building up the town as a pr igrc.-?-
ive businos place which has a bright
future. The building of the Ohio
River and Charleston railroad line
from Blacksburg to Gaffney. Clifton
and Spartanburg, will make Gaffney,
City a place of competition and.
hence, a fine manufacturing point.
-
Round Bale Compresses.
Tho fears of monopoly in the hand
ling of cotton by the round-bale pro
cess, which have existed in some
quarters, may he set at rest by t lie
statement in the Manufacturers' Re
cord that it is authoritatively inform
ed that the American Cotton Go. pro
poses to operate its cylindrical com
presses in co-operation with local
planters and gin tiers throughout the
South. The plan of operations that
has been decided upon will enable
planters and ginners to avail them
selves of the benefits of this invention
on a liberal co-operative basis, with a
market for their cotton assured. The
company will begin at once the intro
duction of round-bale compresses.
In an interview in the Manufact
urers’ Record Mr. Henry Hertz,
president of the New York Cotton Ex- j
change, calmly and accurately gages
tne opposition to the new process,
and [rmn an independent standpoint,
supported by practical experience, he
s »vs that * it ;s absolutely certain
that cotton packed in cylindrical
biles under the system adopted by
tnis c mi party will bring higher
prices all the world over than that
packed in the prevuding style."

How’s This!
ilaadrcil It'llhti-
readers about famine stricken India.
Wouldn’t it be a grand and noble
thing for the people of Cherokee
county to contribute something to
the relief of the^starving millions of
that famine stricken country. If
we can't give much we have no doubt
hut what a little would be thankfully
received hy them. It looks to us like
if we would minister to their temporal
wants ir. would enable our mis
sionaries there to better minister to
their spiritual needs. If we give
them food when they are ; hungry
they will regard us as a friend indeed
and when they do so regard us they
will he better fitted to receive the
gospel that we are trying to get them
to accept. We do not know how
this will take with everybody but we
oati assure you it has been written
