Prof. Chambers. Prayer was then
offered by the Rev. T J. Campbell,

Maj. D. It. Duncan of Spartanburg,

name of Butler, an i alluded to Maj.
Duncan ys a gallant soldier who had
been at “the Hashing of the guns,” a
distinguished citizen, a cultured, all
round Christian gentlemen, a good
old rebel, and one whom we all loved
and delighted to honor.
Col. Butler made a tasteful, point-

young people to be true to the mem
ory of their ancestors, and to draw
inspiration from the story of their
sublime courage and heroic deeds.
Maj. Duncan followed and held tin-
audience for about one hour in almost
breathless interest. He paid a noble
tribute to the memory of Capt. Juke
Carpenter, in honor of whom tin
Cutup is named, the hereof ~.vo wars,
the man who volunteered when lie
knew what war meant. He spoke in
lijigh praise ot the women of the south,
and portrayed ki living colors the
scenes of parting between them and
their brothers, husbands and lovers.
