As to The Ledger not publishing
a tabulated report of the result of the
election we presume that it is fair
that our patrons know the reason
why wo have not done so. In the
first place we did not have figures
enough in the office to put the result
in a table. There were forty odd
candidates and thirteen polling pre
cincts and we attempted No get the
figures in tabulated shape a\

your paucr to state a few facts concerning

not think when we were working so forthe
new county that GatTnoy, the county seat,
would try to use any unfair means against
the country uoople. hut we are afraid. If re
ports are true, that she lias not only done so
In our first election, hut will continue to
take advantage on every occasion. It is re
ported that a private caucus was held in
Gaffney for the purpose of consolidating up
on certain of her candidates. Why. one of
our candidates, who was elected, received
only forty votes in Gaffney. Now it is we,!
known that this young man lias numerous
friends in Gaffney who would have supported
him but for their pledge in that mei-tnic.
Now, Mr. Editor, all this looks <|uitv suspi
cious since you published no laiiulat“d re
port of the election. If Gaffney proposis
uniting against the country it is fair for us
to form clubs against Iter. We farmers w Li
have to keep an eye on our county seat
hereafter, it is impossible to make such a
model county of Cherokee as'i nk I.r.iK.dit
urges If we have to he distrustful of our
county seat. We have heard some of our
leading farmers say they are almost tempted
to have their names eraceti from The Leixh.ii
list because of the omission of the tabulated
report. We insist upon seeing It in your

Our correspomlent had done us the
favor to sign his name in full to the
article, therefore we know to whom
we address our remarks. We did
not print the full name because he
evidenced in his signature that lie
preferred us not to do so.
It is indeed a surprise to us to
know of a caucus ever having been
held in this city to further the inter
est of any candidate or candidates.
The Ledger had no knowledge of
one until it received the above letter.
We have no doubt our friend posi
tively believes a caucus was held,
but we positively disclaim any knowl
edge of it other tlitn what he says.
We can say most positively that we
were not in the caucus and further
that we received no invitation to
join one and further that we would*
not have joined one iiad we been in
vited. We think our friend is in er
ror and would like for him to be
more esp icit and state the time and
place and who attended. Oar corres
pondent evidently refers to Mr. J.
Lb. Jefferies, when ho says “one of
our candidates who was elected re
ceived only forty votes in Gullney."
If we are correct in our surmise our
correspondent must conclude in the
face of the facts that Mr. JelTeries
received a very flattering vote at Gall-
ney. lie must remember that Mr.
Jefferies had as opponents a number
of the most exemplary and popular
men in town. Mr. Jefferies is a good
man and will make a good clerk and
we are certain is entirely satisfactory
to his many friends in Gaffney.
Surely our correspondent will al
low the men of the town as much
privilage as he would take himself.
If ho chosos to vote for his personal
friend will he not allow the man in
town to do the same? Personally,
we vote for who we please, let the
man he from the to or the county.
We never stop to consider where a
man lives. Wo vote for the man we
think best suited for the place, no
matter who ho is or where ho may
live, and we believe a very large
majority of the people of this town

We trust this is sufficient to satisfy
the mi st exacting and if any of our
leading farmers desire to have their
names erased from The Ledger’s list
on that account we can only say that
they will come nearer solving the
problem by adding moie names to
the list and thus enable us to buy
more material with which to do the
work.
Laying all jesting aside, we believe
our friend has been misinformed and
we assure him if the state of affairs
to which he complains ever existed
we knew nothing of it. They would
not trust us into the secret and
therefore this paper was not a party
to it. Our mission is to work for the
good of the whole county and we
propose to endeavor to carry out

last week on business. I saw lots of

We have good farmers in this sec
tion and we have often thought that
if they published their modes of farm
ing and the results in The Ledger
they would benefit each other and
add a good deal of good reading to
our columns. Let them describe the
implements best suited for preparing
the soil and for cultivating the
different crops. The soil best adopted
to each crop, the manner of treating
it bsforo planting and cultivating af
ter. And then give the result of
their work.
’Ihe farmers, on whom all of all
other avocations must depend, know
their work better than we do, and we
make the above suggestions hoping
that a number of other things will
appear to them that they could write
about that would he beneficial to
their brothers.
Such a course would not only help
your hrethern in their immediate
crops hut it would create an interest
in farming that would drive away the
dull monotony that many seem to
think is incident to the business, in
crease our harvests and improve our
lan is.
Now is the time to avail yourselves
of an oppmtunity to help one an
other.
The farmers institute to be held
here tomorrow will he the first of
the kind ever held in this section and
to many, if not all of our people, it
will be something entirely new. ITos-

Columbia Gold Medal.
See. and Treas. A. H. Twitchell. of
the Clifton (S. C.) Mfg. Co., has
lately been showing a handsome
medal, in aluminum case, just re
ceived from the Columbian Exposi
tion, held in Chicago, and awarded to
the Clifton Mills for the best brown
sheeting on exhibition. On one side
of the medal are the words. “Clifton
Mfg. Co.,” with a raised picture of
Christopher Columbus, just as ho
lands upm the shores of the New
World. On the reverse side are the
words. “World’s Columbian Exposi- !
tion, in Com incineration of the Four |
Hundredth Anniversary of the Land
ing of Columbus.” The Diploma I
awarded t*o Clifton Mills is also a
valuable and prized possession.
