MOTHERS FRIEND
The society event of the seasffn
was the presentation of “The Plan
ter’s Wife.” by the Shelby Itramatic
Clnb, ut tlie Seminary, last Friday
evening. The weather was noxt to
dreadful, as there was a continuous]
downpour during almost the entire
day, and the rainfall did not abate in i
the evening, but notwithstanding this
drawback there was a good si/ed and
highly appreciative audience present
to witness the play, and we have yet
to hear the first adverse criticism of
the same.
The choice of the play selected by
the Shelby Dramatic Club evidenced
the good judgment of those who had
the club in charge. ‘‘The Planter’s
Wife” is a romance of the lute war,
and is told in thrilling style, while
the comedy interspersed serves to 1
relieve the mind of the auditor from ,
the oppressive wrong being enacted
toward a pure and good woman who
loves as only a pure, good woman can
love. Wo had seen the play before
by a professional troup and knew
what to expect, and we can truly say,
our friends from Shelby gave us an
agreeable surprise.
Miss Bessie Gardner, the leading
lady, showed evidence of much study
on her part. She was by far the best
member of the troop, hut we do not
mean any diaparugement toward the
rest in saying Ibis, as all acted their
parts exceedingly well. We have
seldom seen u leading lady in an
amatuer dramatic club that excelled
her work of Friday night, and we are
certain we have never seen one to
surpass her. Her action was with
ease and grace, her lines were well
learn ;d, and she spoke them with a
pathos or mirth just as the author
had written them.
Miss Cora Barnett’s “Angie Gor-
dan” was a nice piece of stage work.
Frivolous and frisky, her love-making
to the bashful “Simeon Sincoe,” was
well done.
Of the male cast that deserves spe
cial mention the “Albert Graham” of
Mr. Harold Hall and Mr. Pearsall
Humphrey’s “Arthur Blake” were
about equal, while Mr. Robert Esk
ridge's “Simeon Sincoe”.was a very
clever piece of work.
All the cast was good, and it was
evenly. balanced. The following is
the full cast:
Albert Grubiim, The I'lunter.
Harold Hull.
Harry Livingston, The Yillian.
John K. Wells.
Arthur Hlake, Prisoner of War.
Pearsall Humphrey.
Simeon Sincoe, Historian.
Robert Eskridjjc.
John Walters, Witness.
Hatcher Webb.
Edith Gray. Planter’s Wife.
Bessie Gardner.
Planter's Daughter.
Lilly Wray.
Angie Gordan, I risky Maiden.
Cora Barnett.
Mrs. Gordun, Angie’s Mother.
Irene Suttle.
Toniette, Servant,
Clyde Webb.
If ever the Shelby Dramatic Club
comes to Gaffney again we trust they
may have fair weather, and wo know
they will be greeted by a large audi
ence.
