Oolimbijl, S. 0., March 10.—Nows of a horriblo tragedy roachos here from Aiken county. The two jiriuciples are a very bright mulatto ami his octoroon wife. Jealousy led to the affair. Philip Thomas and his wife, Araer- icus, were living near Aiken. The man becoming dissatisfied with his wife’s conduct made arrangements to move to a farm in a distant part of the county, but Americus refused to go with him and took up her abode with Laura Mc Cain, an old negro woman. Thomas went to Laura McCain’s house and asked to see his wife. The eld woman tried to keep him out. but he forced his way in and immediately dashed at Americas with a razor. She ied out the back door iuto a field. Thomas gave chase, caught and throw her down, breaking her back. Then kneeling over her body, one knee on each arm of the prostrate woman, he held back her head with one hand while he almost severed it from the body with his razor. Thomas then fled, taking to the woods. Under the leadership of Chief of Po lice Weeks of Aiken a posse of negroes followed him. C., March 13. — Former President Grover Cleveland, Captain R. D. Evans, Inspector Lam- berton and Dr. Wood, United States army, arrived hero on tho United States tender Violet. To a reporter who went aboard the Violet immediately on her arrival Mr. Cleveland said that his rheumatism had disappeared and his general health was better than for a long time. Thoma* ami Hyan Mint Anxwer tho .Suit of the Loi:ixvllle anil Nashville. Chabi.eston,March 10.—In the United States circuit court, Judge Simontou overruled the de'murrer recently filed by Messrs. Thomas and Ryan, through their attorney, Henry Ornwforu. Some months ago the Louisville and Nash ville system, as part lessee of the Geor gia railroad, filed suit against tho Port Royal and Augusta railroad for $99,000, alleged to he due on the traffic balances by the Receiver. When the road was sold to Thomas and Ryan the purchasers assumed all debts rightly due by tho receiver. They submitted a demurrer to the claim of the Louisville and Nashville company, and it is that which was overruled. Time is given Thofnas and Ryan within which to file an answer. As a stand off to this Issao Bayle and Jim McLeod, ne groes, charged with being accessories to flie murders committed by Cooper, have been acquitted, but the latter, who runs a farm and restaurant, has been noti fied to leave the state and is selling out preparatory to doing so. Factory Uinployox In n fr’ight. Walhalla, S. C., March 13.—Benson McAllister and Julius Meldham, em ployes in the Walhalla cotton mills, re newed an old feud that has been be tween them for some time. Boon they decided to go outside and fight it out. They were up stairs, and Meldham, reaching the stairway first, went to the bottom and turned to look to see if his antagonist was following just in time to receive a severe blow from a box thrown from tho top by McAllister. He received a severe! cut over the left eye, from which he was unconscious for some time. McAllister fled, but was soon captured. Tragedy Over a Trivial .Matter. Columbia, S. C., March 16.—In Rock Hill, Henry Dozier was guyed by Fra zier Tuggle for falling off a bicycle. They quarreled, Tuggle drawing a pis tol. Dozier followed Tuggle to the house ot a young lady he had taken home from church for the purpose of licking him. He sent a boy in to say he wished to make friends. Toggle came out and was immediately attacked. He was shot through the lungs and will die. They are both young men of stand ing iu the town. Many Bid* Are Offered. Georgetown, S. Charlotte, N. C., March 11.—Sena tor B. R. Tillman of South Carolina, in an interview here, said: "I see you are all in a devil of a muddle hero about railroad matters. R. &G. railway and Whisanaut & Co., tho jury returned a verdict of $i0,- 000 against the railroad. The road ap peals to the supreme court. Murderer Myer* Recaptured. Columbia, S. C., March 11.—Frank Myers has been recaptured and will hang for murder in Georgetown next month. A month ago Sheriff Skinner of Georgetown entrusted to a negro boy the duty of locking the jail’s patent steel doors. The follow seized the op portunity to turn Myers loose. Skinner has been severely criticised and the boy will be sent to the penitentiary. The murderer did not make tho best use of his liberty and was unexpectedly cap tured. Newberry Award* Two Contractu. Although she had been i drowned bnt a few minutes, all efforts at resuscitation failed. A Mechanic Take* Strychnine. Columbia, S. O., March 15.—At Ches ter, S. S. Brunson, a white mechanic, committed suicide by taking a dose of strychnine. For some time he had been oat of work, but recently secured a po sition and apparently wus making a comfortable living. The Columbia New* SaxpendH. Columbia, S. C., March 15.—* The Evening news has suspended publica tion after a long and unsuccessful strug gle to, make both ends meet. Under one name or another Columbia bos had an afternoon paper for 30 years. The columns of a newspaper repre sent an actual cash value.
