THIEVES BREAK IN TO STEAL
AND WERE DISAPPOINTED.
Xiglit before last thieves came into
our store and turned everything up
side down and piled all goods around
on the counters, played havoc and
had a big time generally and .didn’t
steal a thing, but just came around
yesterday and bought what they
wanted. They said goods were so
low in our store that it wasn’t any
inducement to steal them, because
they couldn’t have carried off enough
in a whole night to amount to what
a bale of cotton would come to.
Now friends, if you want to make
your cotton money hold out, come to
see us and we’ll stretch each of your
dollars into about two, by selling you
goods cheaper than others.

The wood dealers are at work again.
This time they tackled Dr. M. W.
Smith’s pile and carried off about a

Messrs. Rapaport and Cohen, of
Augusta, (ia.. realizing the magndli-
cent business outlook for Gaffney,
have moved to our town and opened
up a general merchandise business on
Granard street.
Rev. T. .1, Campbell reports a cu
rious freak of vegetation in the fact
that a v.bite and red sweet potatoc
have grown on the same vine. Mr.
Campbell says it is the first instance
of the kind within his knowledge.
Mrs. Weir, wife of Mr. Rufus
Weir, of this city, died last Sunday
afternoon after a long illness. Her
remains were carried to Kings Moun
tain on Monday where they were in-
lerml. Mrs. Weir was a lady of fine
character, and had many friends
here. She leaves a husband and sev
eral children who have our sympa
thy.
The Fourth (Quarterly Conference
for Gaffney Station will be held at
Beulah on Saturday before the third
Sunday in this month. All the
members are especially requested to
be present. Rev. A. J. Cauthen will
preach at 11 o’clock Saturday morn
ing after which the conference will
be held
Will C. Cameron, who was at Cher
okee Ford and Gaffney about 187') to
1877, and who married Miss Carrie
Butman, was killed at Flushing, X.
Y.. August Bith. He was superin
tending some machinery when he was
caught by a large belt and whirled up
against the upper floor with fearful
force. His body was crushed and he
died instantly.
That well known architect, Mr.
Hook, of Charlotte, was in the city
last Friday inspecting the work done
on the City Hall. We learn that he
expre ssed himself satisfied with the
work done but concluded to add
about ten feet to the clock tower.
This will be a valuable addition and
will give the dials of the clock a much
more convenient elevation.
Bropcrfy holders should be very
careful not to drive away home seek
ers with fancy prices. One of the
best ways in the world to build up a
town is to have good bargains for
home seekers and cheap rents and
one of the best ways to kill a town is
to run the property “out ’o sight”

him go to keeping bouse and nine
times out of ten he become a fixture

Thornwcll orphanage and South Caro
lina can never pay what she owes to
its efficient president, the Rev. Win.
Plumer Jacobs. The fDllowing is the
letter:

My Dear Friend—I received your
draft, dated fflst ult., of $28.90, col
lected by ladies of your flourishing
young city for our orphans. It is
just like your place to bo foremost in
every good work and generous in the
doing of it. And your sympathetic
women in making this collection have
only added one more to their innum
erable acts of loving kindness.
I want to thank, in behalf of our
orphans, every one of the kind con
tributors, and therefore 1 beg you to
hand this note of grateful acknowl
edgement to your city paper, with
request for publication.
We have many a grave responsibil
ity in the care of a family of one hun
dred and fifty souls, and it is to be
made yet heavier as soon as the Eliza
beth Home is completed, which will
be very shortly, so increasing our
number by twenty-five. For the
support of all these we are looking,
through faith, to our Heavenly
Father, believing that He will put it
into the hearts of many to give, even
as he has touched your hearts.
That our orphans are well cared for
and love their home appears from
this simple statement: Though we
have no legal control over them of
any kind, yet of the one hundred or
more who managed in August to get
away on a four weeks vacation, every
one, without a solitary exception,
was back at their posts on the 1st
day of December.
Again thanking you and through
you our generous friends in Gaffney,
I am yours faithfully,
