Columbia, S. C., Sep. 1).—At 2
o’clock this morning sufficient re
turns are in to show that Governor
Evans has been beaten for the Senate
by General Earle. Allowing Evans
two-thirds of the unreported vote and
placing it over 80,000, he cannot re
duce Eerie’s majority below 3,OIK) at ;
the lowest estimate. At 2 o’clock
this morning a vote of .">(»,HSS is ac
counted for. The total vote in the
first primary was 78,231. Of the
vote already reported Evans lias 22,-
317 against Earle’s 31,070, Earle’s
majority being 11.7o3. 'ihc vote re
ported is pretty full.
The people of the state took the
keenest interest in the election and
the result is 110 surprise in conse
quence of the developments of the
last few days. Governor Evans un
questionably injured his chances by
revelations in the dispensary scandal,
and now it may be confidently ex
pected tiiat more interesting revela
tions than ever will come forth.
This much has been indicated by
those in possession of many facts of a
far more Interesting character than
those already made.
The second primary election passed
off hero yesterday very quietly.
Earle received 182 and Evans 145 for
I’. S. Bennte. Schumpcrt 17C> and
Sease K>(> for solicitor. Howell 175 i
and Leonard 15)5 for county super- |
visor. Bishop 13n and Foster 200 !
for coroner. Burnett 222 and Nor
man 108 for master.
From the indication of partial re
turns from the county Evans will get
less than a thousand majority in this
county, that it will be close between
Schumpert and Sease for solicitor,
and that Howell, Foster and Norman
are elected.
In the election here for Congress
5th District. Finley received 200 votes
and Strati 108.

DEATH’S DOINGS.
The Grim Reaper Saddens a Number
of Homes.
Mrs.-Moore, wife of Mr. Charles
Moore died at her home at 1‘acolet
Mill last Friday, and was buried here
in the Limestone Cemetery last Sat
urday. The funeral services were
conducted by the pastor the Rev. Mr.
Langston. Mrs. Moore was a daught
er of the late Cupt. R. F. Montgomery
and had many relatives and friends
here. She leave 1 devoted husband
and two children ho have the sym
pathy of all.
Lived Beyond Three Score and Ten.
Mrs. Frank Northey died of typoid
fever at her home three miles East of
Gaffney early Monday morning. Mrs.
Northey was quite an old lady hav
ing readied Hie advanced age of 75
years. An aged husband and seven
children survive her. She was a
member of the I’rovtdence Baptist
Church at which peace she was buried
Tuesday last in the presence of a
large number of relatives and friends.
A Worthy Man Passes Away.
James Stroup, one of Union coun
ty’s most worthy men, a hard-work
ing and prosperous farmer, died lust
Saturday at his homo near Mercer.
Mr. Stroup was distinguished for his
industry, strict business habits and
honor and integrity, He was well
known in this city where he hud
ipany friends who join in tiie sorrow
of his widow and children.
A Well Known Lady Dead.
Mrs. Ann Jackson Sanders, of Col
leton county, died last Sunday in
SpartanDurg at the residence of her
daughter, Mrs. T. J. Trimmier. Mrs.
Sanders was well known In this city
where she had many friends who
sympathize with the bereaved.

A New Firm-
Messrs. John Spake and John
Blanton have rented the store re
cently placed by L. Baker on ids lot
near the culvert on Limestone street,
and will open up a stock of general
merchandise in it this week. These
two Jolins are of the .vorthiost and
most enterprising young men in tills

Mrs. Douglas’ mother, Mrs. J. E

John Davis, one of the most popu
lar boys that ever handled a yard
stick in this city, again graces the
Bee Hive.
Mrs. \V. O. Lipscomb and children
returned to the city Friday after a
short stay at Fucolet with relatives
and friends.
Lawyer N. \\\ Hardin was over
from Blacksburg Tuesday.
Mr. and Mrs. \V. B. DuFre returned
to the city last Friday after a short
stay in the mountains of Western
North Carolina.
E. H. Fullonwider and Geo. Frick,
of Shelby, were in the city lust Thurs
day. These gentlemen have many
warm friends in Gaffney. Why not
come and live with us gentlemen?
Mrs. I). A. Thomas, who has been
spending some weeks with relatives
and-friends in Santuc. Union county,
returned to the city lu<t Thursday.
F. G. Stacy was in Blacksburg last
Sunday.
Mrs. Jell Dillard and children, of
Spartanburg, visited relatives in the
city last week.
Capt. John W. Ross, whoso illness
we noticed last week, was in the city
last Monday receiving the congratu
lations of his many friends.
Miss Florence Briggs, one of GalT-
nev’s most charming young ladies,
who has been visiting friends and rel
atives and friends in Union, returned
to the city last Saturday.
The many friends here of Claude
Tolleson are glad to hear that he's
recovering from quite a severe attack
of fever.

and Maude Thomas took in Blacks
burg last Sunday visiting friends and
relatives.
C. C. Harris has been in the city
with his family several days the past
week. He reports business on the

J. I). Jefferies, of Asbury, was in
the city yesterday on business.
A. J. GaUegher, of Fountain Inn,
is in the city several days visiting
his brother, W, C, Gallegher, the

Mrs. Harry Gooding and little

A Charleston newspaper correspon
dent writes as follows from Union,
S. C.. in regard to the new opera
tives’ houses built by the Union Cot-
tom Mills: “About fifty now houses
have been built, and they are ar
ranged for two families, eight rooms
downstairs and four upstairs. The
chimney is arranged so us to give four
fire-places down stairs and four stove
flues up stairs. Each family will use
half of the house, a dining room,
cook room and two family rooms
downstairs, and two sleeping rooms
upstairs, with a stairway for each
family.

The McGill Reunion.
There was a family reunion at
Smyrna, in York county, on Hie 2nd
inst., of the descendants of the lute
Hon. William McGill, one of the pio
neers of that county. It was a grand
meeting. Two hundred and eleven of
the descendants were present besides
hundreds of friends. Sucli meetings
must be pleasant. They are surely
interesting and instructive for they
always bring out some almost for
gotten local history.

The fail session of Cooper-Lime
stone opens next Wednsay, Septem
ber Hith. From the indications the
opening attendance will lie larger
than for a number of years past.
The building is undergoing a thor
ough renovation this week prepara
tory to the opening. There will be
but a slight change in the faculty
this year.
