riably follows a tragedy. The real
actor passes of! the stage am!
hit rest while Punch and Jud/aport
and piny responsive to his call, dft hen
shall wo see its like again? W e hope
never. Three-fifths of the voters of
the state are virtually disfranchised
and willingly keep aloof from politi
cal gatherings which seldom minister
to kindlier feelings, or makes one
feel that all the world’s akin. Is it
true that there is a “slated ticket? ’
Can it he that in soghort a time there
is a ring within a ring? that that in

circumference possess a charmed life?
Well! well!! “All’s well that ends
well,’’but the end is not yet. Two

wave.
MEN AND MEASURES.
IRRIGATION.
Sooner or later >vo will have to
come to it. Iri'tg&tion is a necessity.
The Cod of nature and ot grace is
boundless in his resources. Ho does
not mean that any of His creatures
should suffer for the lack of any good
thing. He has stored up water for
us in great reservoirs on the earth's
surface at' different levels; hut that
is not enough, for thousands of feet
henealii the surface, old earth is
honeycombed with living water, made
so by the best of filtorers; and he
who wills may drink and thirst for
more. Above, around and about us
the airy chariots are filled with what
makes the pearly dew, the falling
rain, the crystal snow—all servants of
the Hand Divine that made us thirsty
creatures dependent upon his bounty.
Are we to sit idly by and take what
falls into our laps without helping
ourselves from the great res
ervoirs on every hand? ' v e have not
yet obeyed the Divine command to
“possess and subdue the the earth.”
We have begun to make the lightning
do our bidding, hut very lightly have
we yet touched the waters of the
earth as an agricultural people.
Visit sections that have utilized
this bounty of nature by calling it
into service, and all around hears
testimony to its ability to make the
bif)S«om its the rose.” Why
Mien not use the water so lavishly
bestowed, and irrigate our gardens,
our fields and our orchards and com
pel the earth to bring forth of her
abundance for tiie joy and strength
of man and beast and every creeping
thing. We gain experience with our
years. It will come to us after
a while. And when wo do prepare to
receive and hold in nature’s lap the
excess of her bounty we will begin to
appreciate how much wealth is hid
away in one acre of land, and all for
the use of man.
THE DISPENSARY.
The state campaign has opened up,
anew, interest in the dispensary.
Now, it is not shall wo have the dis
pensary, for the dispensary has come
to stay for sonic time to come, hut
there is a feeling, a strong feeling,
t hat all is not right within. There
must he a big profit in the business.
Who gets it? It is not the State, if
we must judge from the small amount
that lias been turned into the State
treasury.
The liquor business must he a pay
ing business, if we are to judge from
the fortunes accumulated rapidly by
private parties who engage in the
business. The State has been push
ing it for the money there is in it.
Surely she is ns able as a private in
dividual to plan wisely when capital
to commence the business has been
furnished her, and all power has
been placed in her hands to enforce
her demands. The people now ask
to know something. They wish the
curtain lifted.
ACKOWLEDGED at last.
GatTney has scored another point.
In her progressive inarch she at
tracts attention. The postollice de
partment says that “seeing is believ
ing.”’ But this time it is the great
Southern Railway system that slops
long enough to make a bow of recog
nition and extend the hand of
friendly greeting.
The Vestibule now stops when
Gaffney is called, and we are brought
in closer touch with the business
world that throbs along this artery of
commerce. “ I'hunfc foil,” Nashville
Southern, it was niaely tone, Aljd M
opportune that wo must thank you
Things Said and Dote About PoIltiMl

The state campaign closes today at

BRYAN BEFORE THE PEOPLE.
From hastily constructed platforms
and from the rear of passenger
coaches Bryan has hurriedly ad
dressed the people. This is what he
might have expected, but it amounted
to little compared with what is now
expected of the presidential nominee.
His first appearance after leaving the
scone of bis speech of acceptance whs
in rural New York, at the town of
Madalia. Here, as elsewhere, he
evinced Ids ready tact. Ho does (he
right thing in the right way, at the
righttiinc. He has the happy faculty
of sizing his audience at a glance,
and speaks not to offend, hut to en
lighten and convince. Expecting to
meet opposition, he meets men can
didly as men, face to face and nearly
always parts with them on kindlier
terms than was their earlier greet ing.
Thus it was at Madalia, and thus it is
apt to ho as from time to time he
meets the people us ho makes tlio
“grand round” during the present
campaign.
Bryan knows how to use the pithy
sayings of such men us Lincoln and
Grant and Blaine and turn them to
the furthering of the cause lie has
been set to represent. When ho
reaches Southern soil ho will likely he
equally happy in addressing southern
audiences.
There is more Catarrh in this sec
tion of the country than all other
diseases put together, and until the
lust few years was supposed to be in
curable. For agreat many years doc
tors pronounced it a local disease, and
prescribed local remedies, and by con-
stanlly failing to cure with local treat
ment, pronounced it incurable.
Science has proven catarrh to he a
constitutional disease and therefore
requires constitutional treatment.

Since 1878 there have been nine

parts of the country in whicli Cham

success. Dysentery, when epidemic,
is almost as severe and dangerous as
Asiatic cholera. Heretofore the best
