BRYAN’S NEW YO IK SPEECH.
Contrary to expect at ons, Bryan’s
speech of acceptance was read by him
from manuscript. Hearing a speech
is particularly tiresome to an orator
and it is wearisome to nn audience.
Bryan knew that be was speaking to
the reading world; tbu* every “i”
must be dotted, every ‘ L ’ crossed.
He appreciated the fact 1 nit Repub
licans were looking on to find a weak
point in the armor win re a spear
might be thrust to the (juick; be
knew as well that Democrat and Pop
ulist were expecting him i formu
late still more clearly their distinct
ive views so far as they are agreed.
Of course (lie keenest, criticism bus
been brought to bear on the speech. J
if, will be used by Republicans
against and by the Democrats for the
speaker in the campaign that is now
begun in earnest.
He has taken the plat form on which
he stands before the people of the
Tinted States for election as their
chief executive and expounded it
freely and fully as he sees it. This
was expected of him. Now he cun
rest awhile before meeting the ap
pointments made for him. \Y hen ho
looks the people in the eye, “Richard
is himself again.”
try over. Watson, In polities, is as
odd a creature as Sam Jones In relig
ion ; and I ho former will bo so much
talked about during the next four
months ns the latter has been the
last twelve. This will suit the Geor
gia statesman. Of course he will not
O
preside over the dignified senators of
the fifty-fifth congress, but ho will
have the grandest opportunity to air
his views and spread far and wide the
principles that make tho Populist a
distinct party. Tom is long-headed.
Few can equal him in debate. Like
B. R..Tillman, be has a taking power
with ho people that is hard to un
derstand. In some way he gets close
to his hearers. Perhaps he docs not
know the secret himself, but he has
the power of moving men.
HOKE SMITH.
Why bo surprised that the secre
tary of the Interior should decide to
stand by the Democratic party! In
this he is not peculiar. On the stump
he announced his allegiance, let the
nomination be what it may. He
would have preferred a sound money
man to Bryan, but Bryan better
than breaking up a party that has
given life and prosperity to a nation.
If he funis that he is not in accord
with the President and his cabinet,
the manly thing is to resign, and the
manly thing in the President would
be to request him to continue faith-
fully to discharge the duties of his
office. His position is an important
one and he has been true to his trust.
He has his convictions and, like a
true man, is not afraid to confess
them. Let us have more Hoke
Smith’s in high positions. The coun
try will not be the loser.
CONVENTION FOR GOLD MEN.
The grand welcome given to Bryan
wherever he goes is but a goad to stir
the gold men to more decisive action.
Tho ‘id of September is to find them
i i Convention at Indianapolis.
They have uttered their solemn
protest against tho act ion of the ma
jority of the Democratic party, hvon
in Convention at Chicago they pre
sented a solid phalanx and warned
and begged but in vain. They did
their duty well. Are they denounced
still? Do they believe in the great
principles for which the party has
contended ami which distinguish it
from all other parties? Has the
party lost its power with them be
cause on one question—the financial
—there cannot bo concord? If the
sound money men should put out a
ticket for presidential honors they
will, in all probability, defeat tho
main object they have in view. Bry
an’s chances of success will be in
creased thereby. However much wo
may dislike the decisive action taken
at Chicago on the money question,
let us stick to the party and work a
cure within tho ranks.
ELECTRICITY.
Wonderful! is it net? Yes, this
wo will all readily adm't. And yet
we as assuredly feel that the world is
only at the threshold, with tho door
slightly ajar, where a glimpse, not a
look, beckons us to enter. Home of
its uses wo know. Gradually even
Ibis subtle power has been harnessed
uqd made to minister to man’s com
fort. But what is it? This ques
tion has yet to be answered.
An Edison has patiently worked
out many problems for us, but to no
one now must we look for a!! the
light on any subject. If his life is
spared, he will likely show us many
more uses to which this agent of the
creator can he put.
We need not he surprised at any
developments. They are stored up
for us and we shall get to use them
just so soon as we are prepared to
use them. <>f this we may rest as
sured. God lias not exhaust' d his
resource-. There is yet in"re to f'fi-
low in nature a- in grace.

A citizen of this state was in New

There in a broker’s office lie chanced
to meet Mr. Colin Rhind.of Augusta,

Tillman didn’t get a cent. John

There is more Catarrh in this sec

Ravenna Readings.
(Correspondcnco of Tho Lodger.)
Ravknna, S. C., Aug. 18.—Good
showers fell hero today, but still we
are hot. The crops of all kinds will
he short. The cotton is opening rap
idly, and picking and fodder pulling
keeps nearly everybody employed.
Ravenna keeps improving. A new
residence is going up on Main street,
with Mr. Mize us contractor, and
another new store is talked of. It is
to bo erected at the forks of Main and
Mathe’s streets, nearly opposite M.
W. Brown it Co.’s store, on F. I).
Horn’s place.
Revivals are in progress now.
About twenty young converts were
baptized in the creek at Goucher last
Sunday by Rev. Hickson. Tho Mor-
man elders arc now holding a meet
ing at the residence of John Poole,
near Goucher church, and are meet
ing with some encouragement. The
Morman elders preach genuine Bap
tist doctrine and consequently draw
more from that sect than any other.
Tho elders ask all to read carefully
II Timothy 3d chap. 1-5 verses and
II Timothy 4th chap. 3d verse.
They arc opposed to excitements
and telling graveyard stories, and
refuse to ask for money. They go
well dressed and claim tlmtthere can
be no separation between husband
and wife. They claim that Baptist
preachers are loose in regard to
the marriage vow, and very seldom
ever allude to the marriage vow being
violated in their churches, hence so
much licentousness among the mem
bers, and the trouble it causes the
better members.
(Juitc a stir is now up over the ar
rest of Obe Parker, whose former
wife lives near Corinth, and who,
about two years ago, married Pal
Waddell, and hist week he married
again. He is now in jail, but as this
is a common occurrence in a state
where no divorce law exists, nothing
will be done. Old Man.
