Tho Woman’s Missionary Society of the Methodist church will bold its regular meeting next Tuesday after noon at 1:30 at the parsonage. Each member is^fspociully requested to be present. The merry-go-round is tho attrac tion now. Tho colored population seem to enjoy the sport immensely and young America is full of joy. Not a few of the adult pale faces indulge. Talk is cheap, but a lot of ^ood hard work will do more to make tho Fourth of July celebration a success than the clutter of a million tongues. Put your shoulder to the wheel and push the chariot along. Someone has said “the minds of groat men run in the same channels.” The Lkihikk would like to see some of Gaffney’s great minds run in the channel of an elegant hotel. We need it more than anyone thing else. We have received an orbitunry no tice which we would be pleased to publish if party desires to pay for it at our regular rates. Politeness and gentleness don’t cost a great sum and it goes a long way to make yoflrself and those around you happy. To look at last week’s paper one would think there were but twenty-three, as that was nil that were represented in the ud columns of the paper. And yet this has the rep utation of being the livest town in the State. There were twenty-seven out of town advertisements. Bear in mind tho twelve page edi tion of The Ledgkii for the 4th of July week. It will he a daisy. Two thousand and five hundred copies will be issued and distributed and tho business man of Gaffney that neglects this opportunity to advertise his bus iness will miss a good thing. There will ho no advance on the advertising rates. " Rev. J. W. Moultrie, who preached tho introductory sermon at the M. E. church of this place last November, will preach next Sunday at 11:30 a. m. and 8:30p.m. Many white citi zens who heard him then have ex pressed n desire to hear him agair and are cordially invited. Our aim is to helpthiscommunity, make it brighter and belter for our having been in it and when \v( get to the point where we havn’t any influence with good people, we’ll pull up stakes ami go somewhere else. • » Poisoned on Ice Crfeam. Last Thursday evening Mr. and Mrs. T. Davenport had as their guert- Miss Hattie Kendrick, of Cooper-Limestone. During the even ing ice cream, furnished by a local dealer, was served. About 12 o’clock nil who had partaken of tho cream were taken sick. Mr. Davenport, his little daughter Winnie and Miss Ken drick were very elek, but the sick ness of Mrs. Davenport and Kyle was not so severe. Mr. and Mrs. Campbell were served that evening from the same freezer of cream as was also Master Robert Lipscomb and Mr. Sam Lit tlejohn, and were also made sick. Mrs. Campbell and Miss Kendrick were confined to their beds several days. The poi"'ning was purely ac cidental and is ..bought was duo to the metal wheel In the freezer. Defends the Dispensary. (Correspondence of The ledger.) Hopewell, June 2.—In the last is sue of The Ledger I notice that the correspondent from Thickety has a long and able article, “Why the dis pensaries and saloons should be abol ished.” I am far from having any desire to enter into any controversy with tho able “Knight of the Quill” from Thickety, but when a prohibitionist can and will see proper to place the dispensary in the same catagory withj the saloons. I shall not be found idl resting, or shall I silently stand b. without pounding the warning no^e to my fellow men. I saw to you, kind reader, that the diyppnanry is the best sn'u- tion of tb*y whiskey problem that I:us ever been, advanced. The Alluring lights of the bar room, the chi^lt of the billiard balls,’ the “darl'Aentrauce,” the mixed and pal atal do drinks are all gone, and llies tem.'ptHtions that allure so many of on* young men front the loving arms mother, father and wife are no jftiorc to he had. 1 say with all sin cerity, and 1 believe truth, the dis pensary will eventually bring us a thousand times nearer prohibition than any other measurer. 1 have expressed the belief that “total prohibition”, is a failure, and cannot he managed with success, and I shall give my reason. We today have the dispensary where a man can legally purchase any whiskey he may desire. We have throughout the State mi army of constables whose duty it is to stop the illicit sales of whiskey. But oh! what a failure. (XnAro me the city in the State where I cannot purchase whiskey outside of the dispensary.) Some ask why. I shall tell you. ’Tis because some men n r e opposed to tho dispensary and will patronize blind tigers. These men are the life blood of the llicit'dicker sellers” and lore and money will never avail to make them disloyal to the trust imposed upon them. Just as long as these men will give their patronage and loyally to the whiskey anarchist just so long will they prosper. Such would bo the case today it wo had “total prohibi tion.” Men would buy, men would Do loya’ to the confidence imposed in them, and no constabulary or force upon God’s green earth could give the desired total prohibition. Have you ever visited a city in the State where you '“know the ropes” and could not purchase all the desired whiskey you wished? Echo answers no. Yorkvtllo has the desired “total prohibition,” and oil! ye false Gods, will you arise in anger and assert that whiskey cannot bo purchased in the town. Xo, though the loving Christian women light and battle on for the right. Xono will say to you that you cannot purchase whiskey in our beautiful liltlecity, but they will tell you with sorrow expressed in every word, “Wo do all we cun to stop it.” Yes they do nil they can and yet it i» a failure. Oh kind and considerate reader, do you wish to make the state of South Carolina a Yorkvllle? Echo answers no! no!! Remember, oh fathers, tills is elec tion year and ’tis said this shall be one of the issues. Do not let any man persuade you or tnuko you vole for “total prohibition” until you have constituted yourself a committee of uno to see personally the law is en force to the letter, if you will do this I then say vote for “total pro- hibiton,” then and not until then will success perch upon the banner of the prohibitionists. In conclusion, oh! dear reader, let me say that this humble correspond ent 1ms often struggled with the de mon. Ho has been drawn to* the precipice where one more step would have been death. Let me beg men. women and chil dren to do all they can to abate the evil.. Young ladies refuse to keep company with a man who comes to you wit whiskojr on his breath. Broctor Sunday. W. E. Phillips and George Benning ton were in this community Sunday. Horace Lipscomb and Tom An thony were the guests of Dan An thony Saturday night. J. W< Allen and wife visited W. E. Lipscomb and family Sunday. There was a prayer meeting at the home of W. E. Bhillips Sunday.
