Hampton Millwood’s wife, of Lawn, is on the sick lift. Mrs. K. C. Watkins has been very ill for some time hut is now on the mend. From every section we hear that our farmers are preparing for a good hog crop this year. Mrs A. A. Dorter had a mess of garden peas for dinner last Monday. Who can heat t hut ? J. II. Cook began taking stock Tuesday morning with a view of sell ing out to Charles Ervin. W. M. Xorthey, who lives in the country east of Gaffney has had a tick wi’e hut she now is convalescent. We learn that Wm. Millwood, of the Dond Farm neighborhood, has & sick wife, though not of a serious nature. A merry party was out straw-riding Saturday night in the moonshine. There was only one “Duny” in the crowd. Mr. and Mrs. D. D. Sides, have the sympathy of the commilty in the j lose of their infant which died Tues day morning. Quite a crowd of Gaffney's pleas ure seekers went to Droud river Fri day evening after the rain to try their hand at fishing. Last week W. A. Peeler presented us with a sample loaf of bread which was baked at his bakery. It was equal to any bread wc have seen in the cities. The Blacksburg telephone lino is is wit hen 51 miles of town. The line will he completed within a few days and will connect with the Gaff ney Exchange. None of the delegates of the Jake Carpenter Camp I'nited Confederate Veterans attended the reunion in Charleston. They were too busy and are waiting for the rally ut Rich mond. The farmers in this section of the county have been needing rain very had up to lust Friday when a good shower came and filled its mission, though wc learn that it did not reach far down the country. A number of farmers are going to sow peas and sorghum cane exten sively this year. Two bushels of peas and a peck of cane seed to the acre of well prepared ground will make tons of line nutrative long forage. W. 1). Thomas, who has been with J. R. Tolleson for thirteen years, is now opened up and staying in his own store near the factory pond in the eastern part of the city. We wish him much success in his new \ business. The GalTney hasc-hall players are slow about getting organized this season hut when they do get started just right they will move things. It is a hard matter to find a town the size of GalTney with as many and as good base-ball players as wo have. The “Old war horse,” Col. I. G. McKissiek, was re-elected Brigadier General of the Second Brigade of the South Carolina Division of the United Confederate Veterans last week in Charleston. Indeed a worthy tribute to a grand old patriot and hero of many hard fought buttle. The hoys of the Gaffney Mills have rented and laved oil three acres of land in the rear of Mr. Huskey’s res idence near the mill and now have a first class base-ball ground. They have given the town boys an invita tion to come down and practice with them. Wo predict a high base-hall fever this season. Our efficient town marshals are hustlers from a way back. They have routed out street tax money that Horatio would hardly have dreamed of in his philosophy. There is no dodg ing or getting around paying where justly due. The only exemption seems to he, “moved to the North Dole” or “dead twelve months.” Rev. J. W. Walker, a Baptist minister of this place, has received a call to preach at Mont. Darion, two and a h\lf miles north west of Blacksburg, He is a bright, in tellectual Baptist minister and will no doubt make a good pastor for the members of that church. He will preach at that church on the regular meeting day which will bo on Saturday before the third Sunday in May ut 2 o’clock. PERSONAL PARAGRAPHS. Francis, who has been working with the GalTney Manufac turing Co. for some time putting down machinery, returned to Fall River, Mass, last Friday. He came in and subscribed for Tm: Lkikikk before he left. Wm. Smith, of Pendergrast, Jack- son county, Gn., has been visiting his nephew, A. F. Kendrick, for the* past few days. His son, Joe, and a nephew of his, a Mr. Braddletou by name, accompanied him. Ho is a brother to Rev. Jno. Smith, a Meth odist minister, who is known by all the old landmarks of Howells Fe'rry’ in Union county. Wm. Smith is now 84 years old and has been absent from this section 11 years. Mr. Kendrick recognized him at first sight. BUILDING NOTES. Miss Fannie Jones is visiting at Latimore, N. C. this week. Mrs. Dr. B. R. Brown, of Pacolet, has been visiting her father Moses Wood at this place. Stow Latimer, of Shelby, was drowned at Sticey Shoals Saturday after noon while in the river sein ing. Mr. Fred Foster, of Campion, S. 0.. visited J. X. Lipscomb, his bro ther-in-law, at this place, last Tues day and returned to his home Satur day. .Mrs. II. L. Parks will take ft visit over to her husband’s home in North Carolina Saturday. Ed Linder was in town Monday. Miss Mol lie J irown, of Pacolet, visited Miss Beonu Wood last week. L. M. Cobh, one of our most worthy farmers from Maud, was in Improvements Going On in and Around Gaffney at Present. Contractor Baker has just finished a neat six room cottage for B. F. Camp, a four room cottage for J. J). Me Lure, a five room house for W. D. Archer and an addition to F. B. Lit tlejohn’s, a handsome dinning room for Mrs. E. A. The Professors, Instructors, and students of the Gaffney Male and Fe male Seminary will have their annual picnic at Cherokee Ford next Friday. These annual picnics are sources of much enjoyment to the students and their teachers. We hope for them a fair day and a heap of fun and trust that some student will furnish The Lkimjmc with an account of the oc casion. There sat in the lobby of the Ger man Artillery Hall yesterday morn ing a battlesearred and silent soldier of Kershaw’s brigade. The old man gave his name as W. 1). Cirby, of Union, lie is 06years old, hut the worries of life and the wounds of buttle have left him an apparently older man. Mr Kirby had come all the way from Union to he with his old solder friends, lie had on his farm clothes, with his well worn broguns. The blue shirt and linen were as clean as they could he, and the oid man was in the best of hu mors. A shell that struck him in the side at Gettysburg lias left its mark, and now Mr. Kihry has to use a couple of walking canes to help him along. Ho says that he has no occu pation loft except to eat and love the women, and these he seems very much disposed to do. Ivy Cliff Items. {Correspondence of The Ledger.) Ivy Cuff, April 27.—Sandow Xorthey has a very sore foot. He can’t walk without the aid of a stick. The fruit crop is very promising at present. Mr. and Mrs. M. L. Ross, of Shelby, have been visiting relatives here the past week. They returned home today. Mr. and Mrs. J. T. I lames, of your city, visited J. S. Xorthey Sunday. Guess Flaw Picker was so busy picking chicken and fish hones last week ho couldn’t take time to pick any flaws. It was too had for the “Kernel” to jump so. Flaw ought to have held Bob. Some of us young people arc think ing of of having a picnic at Cherokee Ford some lime in the near future. If we do wc would like to have Flaw go along and take his banjo. All vegetation seems to vie each other in growing since the recent rain. We had quite a storm last Friday. The lightening struck a large walnut tree near Mrs. Tom Gallney’s yard and peeled the hark almost entirely from tlie tree. Bee-robbing time is again at hand.
