EXPOSITION CONVENTION.
A very representative body of bus
iness men was that that convened in
Spartanburg last Wednesday. They
wore picked men from nearly every
trade and profession, and represented
the push and energy, now active all
over the State.
At last South Carolina is waking
up to the importance, yea the neces
sity of making known her wants, and
advertising her attractions. The
time was when she could sit idly by
and see the brightest and best of her
sons follow the course of the setting
sun in building up other sections. This
drain upon her strength must cease.
At home there is enough to employ
every son of South Carolina and as
many more from abroad who arc will
ing to cat the bread of honest indus
try. Ex-Senutor Patrick Walsh, of
Augusta, Ga., in an admirable ad
dress, pointed out the advantages
offered the Southern States in being
duly represented at Chicago in an
exhil ir, of the product of her looms,
her mines, her forests, her fields and
farms and rivers.
South Carolina lias a great deal to
show, and Spartanburg county, if
she would only half try, would open
the eyes of seekers of homes and
seekers of profitable investment.
Is it true that the pitiful sum of
sixty dollars was the entire amount
received from the State, outside of
Charleston, for the South Carolina
exhibit at Atlanta? It is not thus
that New England built up her mag
nificent industries on a barren soil.
Industries that have made her the
power in the commercial life of the
nation, and that still enable her to
hold the purse strings. A wave of
prosperity is sweeping over us, and
the coming exposition in Chicago is
one of the billows that will enable us
to come into port.
THE AUGHTRY TRIAL.
For the third time has the public
been nauseated by a recital of the
facts of tills noted murder case. It
has cost Richland county about
$o,(KK». and the good people of the
>State ten times that amount in low
ering the moral tone. Who can
count the harm done? The mere
suggestion i.-s often a poisoned arrow
that finds easy lodgment and ceases
not to rankle. We believe the harm
done far exceeds the good accom
plished in scattering on the wings of
the wind, through the press, the de
tails of a murder and the attending
circumstances such as that for which
A ightry was recently arraigned in
C dumbii'. The opposing counsel
often tight until the last ditch is
reached, and again and again ask for
a now trial of strength, all at the ex
pense of the good people whose ser
vants they of right ought to bo.
Aughtry in the penitentiary, work
ing out a life sentence is not half as
much to he pitied as are those whose
minds have ail unconsciously, per
haps, been poisoned by the details.
OUK IMMIGRATION LAWS.
Thanks to our laws the scum of
Europe and Asia finds not so ready a
resting place in America. The door
is opened now rather cautiously, and
often it is closed in the face of
would-be citizens. Now that the
public domain is occupied, and there
is not land to be had simply for tie
asking, one Incentive to come to lie
United States has been eliminated.
Rut wc should increase rather thun
slacken our vigilenee. The safety of
our free institutions, of our republi
can form of government lies largely
in guarding well this door that slill
swings too easily on its hinges. Our
largo cities like New York, Chicago,
New Orleans and bun Fraucis 'o, aie

suffering now from being gorged by
this billions element. Neither emetic
norcathartic'can dislodge the intruder
that has come to stay, but cares not
for home nor those amenities of life
that tame the animal in man.
Still more stringent laws would not
hurt so much ns they would help.
REV. A. J. DIAZ ARRESTED.
The arrest in Havana of Rev. A.
J. Diaz, a celebrated missionary of
the Southern Raptist Convention, has
brought grief to many hearts. As
yet we knew not the charge, but
doubt not that envious hate is at the
bottom of it.
Diaz is discreet. This he has shown
throughout his career*of usefulness,
and of almost unprecedented success.
He was about leaving the island on
account of the perilous situation, hut
the bird must not escape. He knows
too much, and is too reliable a wit
ness to come to the United States
where public feeling is now high, and
sympathies are on the side of the
Cuban against the oppressor. So his
liberty is taken away, and a Cuban
prison opens its door to receive the
evangelist, with a Spaniard for his
jailor. Justice is all he asks, but
just this is to Spain an unknown
quantity. Diaz may seal with his
blood the confession lie has made.
Spain may in her delirium destroy
the life of this grand worker, but the
work will go on when Spanish troops,
discomfited in Cuba, shall he driven
to degenerate Spain. A hearty re-
sponte from one and a half million
Baptist in the South may stay the
hand of the oppressor.

a greater success than any body ex

out in this effort to advertise the

The Gate City.
(Correspondence of The Ledger.)
Atlanta, Ga., April, 18.—(ilorious
springtime has burst upon us with
its solar rays pouring down upon the
glittering church spires and penetrat
ing and warming up our earth. The
trees arc arrayed in elegant tinge and
sombre, presenting a picture the
desnair of artist, poet and musician.
The city parks are becoming
crowded with people seeking pleasure
and recreation.
The exposition building will be
sold at auction during May to the
highest bidder, and will then be re
moved from their sites. A New
York syndicate is figuring on the
property, who say if they secure the
ground will spare no means in beau
tifying and improving Riedmont
park, making it the finest in the city.
Work has commenced in preparing
the foundation for the now mammoth
freight depot which is to be 800 feet
long and cost $1,000,000. This will
make three, million dollar structures
in this city, viz: the Equitable, the j
State Capitol and the new depot.
Reparations are soon to be made 1
in entertaining the physicians ot the
pected here then, who will he royally
entertained.
Since the arrival of spring goods
the display on the principle streets
for miles is a sight to be seen, and I
doubt if rivalled in the South by any
other city.
Some splendid entertainments at
the Grand opera house and also the
Columbia were in progress lust week,
Rolitics are heg'u ing to warm up
oHrullel with the weather. Candi
dates are announcing themselves
freely and the daily papers have been
having it "nip and tuck” si^ce Crisp

the death of Mr. Kirby.
Thomas Wood, of Downey, Cal.,
visited our section last week and de-
del ivered a lecture at Fair View
school house on the resources of the
State of California.
The health of our section is about
on par now, the measles having sub
sided with the exception of a few
cases. Mrs. Mary Floyd is still con
fined to her bed notwithstanding Dr.
Morrows’ confidence in his ability to
restore her to health. Mrs. Floyd
has been confined to her bed for
about sixteen years, therefore she
about lost all will power and the
doctor says that a physician cannot
do much in the absence of all will
power on the part of the patient.
Mrs. Rinkney Floyd has been right
sick for some time but wo are glad to
report that she is now on the mend.
Our farmers are moving things this
spaing. L'uite a number of them be
gun planting cotton about the nth
inst. and some of them began the lust
week in March. The acreage in cot
ton in this section is about the same
as last year. A great deal of corn
has been planted in this section.
Wheat is looking well but owing to
the spring being so dry oats are not
looking altogether so well as wheat.
The Sunday school at Holly Spring
was reorganized a few Sundays ago
by the election of Rev. J. B. Under
wool as superintendant and Ed Wa
ters assistant.
There have been several attempts
made recently to organize a debuting
club at Holly Springs Academy, but
for some reason we are yet without u
debating club. We have plenty of
good material around here to consti
tute a first class debating society if
we could just got them together.
Wm. Davis and daughter, Miss
Corry, of Greers, S. C.. spent last
Saturday night and Sunday visiting
relatives in this section.
Mrs. Ellen Howell, who has been
confined to her room for some time,
by the advice of her physicians has
gone to her fathers, Win. Hens* n, of
Noraii, for the benefit of her health.
W. W. Whelehell, our ex-stone
ware manufacturer, now a farmer,
says that fanning is a mighty nice
business hut it is awfully like work.
G. W. Williams and daughters,
Misses Rartha and Sallie are visiting
in Greenville county today.
G. W. Chapman, White Gary and
Tandy Bruce, et. al.. went to the
city of Greenville this week on busi
ness.
Carl Sudcth, who lives over the
Greenville line, was up before the
United States Commissioner at Green
ville the other day charged with the
illicit traffic in whiskey. He was
discharged, the evidence against him
being insufficient to bind him over to
court. We have been informed that
the marshals were on a very warm 1
“trail” of his distillery. Jaikus.
