THE EXPOSITION.
As we go to press representative
men from all over the State are in
session at Spartanburg. The object
of the meeting is a worthy otc*. The
State has done very little towards
making known her vast resources.
If anything is done in this direction,
it must bo by her public spirited cit
izens, who know, and would have
others know #f the rice fields ready
for enterprising capitol to develop.
To do this, will require well directed
elTort under skillful manipulation.
More than tills will be needed.
Pocket-books will have to be opened,
and a spirit, akin to enthusiasm
should take hold of our people, to lift
the State loan enviable prominence.
It is not surprising that Spartanburg
should have been selected for the
meeting. She has taken the lead in
manufacturing our great staple, and
probably has minerals in greater
variety and larger quantity than any
other county in the State. And even
she is slumbering over this partially
hidden treasure.
Commissioner E. L. Roche, of
Charleston, has been unremitting in
his labors. The success of the meet
ing is largely due to his energy. He*
it is who brought the ends together
est men, and made Ashley Junction
a by-word and a reproach. Let the
good work of cleansing go merrily on.
There is room in the penitentiaries
for violators of the law.
’Tis true that lawlessness begets
lawlessness. It bears fruit a hun

THE BICYCLE.
Two years ago and the bicycle on
our streets and highways was so un
common as to attract attention.
Severe were the criticisms upon its
use, and fora young lady to spin the
wheel would have been almost an
unpardonable sin. How great the
change! Wheels are everywhere.
The man of business, the surburban
resident, the school boy, the letter
carrier, misses in their teens, misses
out of their teens, each on business
or on pleasure bent finds here an
easy, rapid and health-giving exer
cise.
The wheel has come to stay. All
the preaching against it will not
loosen its hold in the affections of
the people. Very pleasant is it to
the looker on as well as to the rider
as, gracefully, he glides along with
out apparent effort, and space is van
quished.
Is Japan going to compete with
our American manufacturers and

1000 are on the way to one Charles
ton firm who proposes to sell them
at fabulously low prices.
THE CODE IN GERMANY.
Even Emperor William’s decree
against duelling will not avail in
Germany. The custom is too deeply
rooted in the public mind to be easily
set aside. Germany must pass
through deep waters, as we have, be
fore the challenge ceases to be given
and received.
Huron Yon Schrader is dead, be
cause he had not moral courage to
decline Yon Kutz’ challenge to meet
him on the field of honor? The Em
peror requested that ho would not
accept, but the stigma of refusal was
more than he could face, and his life
is the forfeit, while his slayer is
lionized. ‘‘To the victor belongs the
spoils.”
How long before man. and woman
too, will recognize that life is a sa
cred gift to be diligently improved—
too sacred for either pistol shot or
rapier thrust to destroy
WICKED EXTRAVAGANCE.
Kings must be crowned. Rut
why’ with such regal pomp and lav
ish display as marks the coronation
of the Emperor of all the Russians?
He is already well established on his
throne and the expenditure of mill
ions of dollars on what should be a
simple and sacred rite only’ un
settles the public mind and renders
less secure his crowned head.
It is not to be wondered at that
the upper and the lower stratums
of society one drifting apart, and
such useless expenditure of the
“sweat” of the Russion serf is not
calculated to curb the nihilist. The
people have’ a right to complain
when their hard earnings are thus
frittered away as frothy nothings,
to gratify a foolish pride. “ITieasy
lies the head that wears a crown,”
may well he said of the Czar of Rus
sia.

Senator Irby did as much as any
man in this State to force that
“weak man who has not talent
enough to defend his own cause and
therefore resort to double-dealing

weak man should in turn down the
political accident, Irby.—Spartan

“A thoroughly loyal Democrat.”
the Jacksoville Citizen explains .or
the benefit of an inquiring contem

his fellow Democrats, whether with
reference to party doctrine or to
party nominations, as the supreme
law. This law he feels hound to obey
because he has pleged himself to do
so upon his honor as a man and Ids

definition possesses considerable
