(.Correspondence of The Ledger.] Hopewell, Mar, 17.—The angel of death has visited this section again. This time taking from our midst, Vernon, the oldest son of Sam. Mitch- ell. Our Sunday school was well repre sented at the convention, held at Wilson’s Chapel last Sunday by Stella Stukes, Bessie Howe, Alice and Annie Howell, also Messrs. John M. Watson, J. Morgan Leech, Sam A. life and Henry W. Thomson. All return and report a most enjoy able time. Your correspondent was agreeably surprised to meet our friend and teacher, 1’rof. McArthur, hut pained to hear him speak of the accidont to I’rof. Sams. Your correspondent is glad to re port that Mrs. Stnarr is improving. There is no more loving and kind j friend than this lady, and it is cer- : tainly a pleasure to report her better. 1 Dame rumor has it that there is to ! he a marriage in this section before long, but I can find out nothing defi nite about it, though 1 have con sulted friend and foe. Mr. W. S. Wilkerson has a fine baby boy at his home. Sir. Warn Whisonant. of Hickory Grove, is quite sick tit his home. Rev. James H. Thacker preached at the school house to a large and ap preciative audience last week. Rev. J. P. Knox will preach at ! Salem Sunday. Mr. Knox iscertainly an able minister and we sincerily trust that‘ Old Salem” will raily on this day with a large and appreciative audience. Several of the hoys from over the river were over to see ‘‘friends” a few Sundays ago. Some say the hoys had too much and as a result, broke the King holt of the buggy en route for home. Thompson is building a blnek-smith and general repair shop near his reshjpnce. GatTney’s popular barber, Archer, is building a nice cottage on Johnson street near the colored Methodist church. L. Baker has the job which assures a good job and early comple tion. —• •— 8o Proof the Cause of It All. Report came to tne city Monday that Ben James, of the Asbury neighborhood, came to town one day last week and took on too much dispensary. It is said he went home and raised such a rumpus with his better-half that neighbors had to in terfere and prevent him from cutting her throat. There’s no telling what a man will do if ho takes on too much 80 proof. — . . Still Another. “The South Carolina Tobacconist,” a weekly published at Sumter, this State, by N. G. Osteen and edited by H. G. Osteen and J. A. Brogdon. has made its appearance among The Ledger’s exchanges. It is a well gotten up paper and treats of tobacco in general and of its culture in South Carolina in particu lar. We commend it to our readers. Patent medicine people advertise because it brings the business. They don’t advertise in worthless papers either. Neither do baking powder concerns. Look at our foreign ad vertisements. And every one, with out exception, say they pay The Ledger more for advertising than they do any other paper of the same class. Why do they do it? Because they recognize in The Ledger a bet ter advtertising medium than the general run of papers. And that’s because Ledger readers patronize Ledger advertisers. If you don’t use our columns you are making a mistake. THE BLACKSBURG ELECTION. Dr. Ramsuer Defeats Mr. Kennedy for the Intendancy. [Correspondence of The Ledger.] Blacksburg, March 2o.—The mu nicipal election at this place Monday passed off quietly. The result of the vote cast is as follows: For Intendant—I). S. Ramsuer 141, J. D. Kennedy 78. For Wardens—J. M. Guyton 147; T. L. Black 14(5; C. L. Whisonant 143; J. T. Darwin 142; J. F. Whiso nant 79; D. L. Brown 79; G. A. Parker 71; W. B. Shearer 71. Dr. Ramseur and his entire ticket was elected. The result seems to give entire satisfaction. At a meeting of the new council Tuesday J. C. Duncan was re-elected chief of police; M. M. Freeman, treas urer .and W. A. Jackins secretary. it. Our- friend W. T. Thompson pre-j sented us several weeks ago with a rock somewhat in the shape of the ! bowl of a pipe. Wells, of Shelby, were here several days this week renewing old acquaintances and young people and help them along in their efforts to serve the Master by allowing them to conduct an occa sional service. Kollock. who has for nine years conducted the Cheraw Re porter in so efficient a manner, has leased the paper to Editor J. 1\ Gib son, of the Pee Dee Advocate, who will, in the future, conduct both pa pers. Mr. Kollock has purchased the Darlington news and will give his tal ented train to that newspaper. We wish both much success and prosper ity. Farmers and planters who have farm products for sale can advertise their goods in The Ledger at lea word. That’s cheaper than wearing out shoe leather going from one man to another. Ramsey came home Tuesday from Spartanburg, where he hud been serving a sentence In jail. He went to his home a few miles north of the city, beat his wife and run her oil from home. His daughter was in town yesterday morning trying to swear out u warrant against him. He also has a sick child at home which is not expected to live. Nice conduct this for a man just released from jail! P. V. Gaffney, the up-to-date ad writer for J. R. Tolleson, told The Ledger last week that they had ad vertised ninety-three pairs of a cer tain line of shoes in The Ledger and that before a week had passed they hud hut nineteen pairs of those shoes on hand. Of course all the sales were not the direct result of the ad but a largo per. cent of the custom ers said that they saw the ad in The Ledger. While our city authorities will not • relax their efforts wo trust that Gov. 1 Evans will offer a reward for Edwards and thereby increase the chances of having justice meted out to him. -* • Maud Matters. C., March 23.—The past week was very cold and windy and armors did but little work on there farms, hut the new week begins bright and lovely, and our farmers are very busy preparing their lands and putting in guano. Several of our farmers went to Gaffney Saturday. They brought hack guano. We had a quiet little wedding Sun day evening. T, M. Lavender and and Miss Linie Hammett were united in llu: holy bonds of matrimony, Rev. John Ruppf performing the cermony. i They expect to remain in this set- | tlcment. Miss Elia Lynch, of Folk county, X. C., is expect to take charge of the school at Ashworth school house [ next week. Rev J. L. Ellis will preach at Grassy Bond next Sunday. Mrs. M. E. Henderson is very low at present. There is but little hopes of her recovery. Mrs. W. J. Horton’s family is im proving. D. R. Purcell and Bob Scruggs, of Gaffney, passed through this section Monday. R. E. Linder, the gentlemanly postmaster of Maud, is having fine sport byclcle riding. He is practic ing for u visit to Gaffney. II. E. Horton has moved info his new dwelling, w. r.
