EUROPEAN EXPE It IMENTERS’ WORK
They Make Discovert* o Heretofore Un
known In Till* Country—Special Photo-
Craphlc 1’nper For the Direct Reception
of the Rays Is Now Made—An Impor
tant Surgical Application of the Ray*.
Washington, March 11. — United
States Consul General DeKay, at Ber
lin, has submitted to the state depart
ment an interesting report upon later
developments of the x rays, accompa
nied by a pamphlet, in which Professor
Roentgen, the discoverer, explains his
researches.
The consul general's report gives
many facts that havo been discovered
by European experimenters in regard to
the rays, which are unknown in this
country. For instance, ho reports that
they have been used to detect false
pearls, after an exposure, of 45 minutes,
and an Australian professor has discov
ered that they can also bo u.;cd to de
tect false diamonds.
A Berliner has made a special photo-
graphic paper for tho direct reception of
the rays. In consequence, it is now
unnecessary to make a negative, and so
the reversed impression incident to tho
negative is obviated. Moreover, it has
been found that many pictnrej may bo
taken at once in this manner by using a
packet of the sensitivo paper, since tho
rays pouctrato all of tho layers.
Rector Bonder, in Spies, has suc
ceeded in passing the rays through a
brass counter, the resulting photograph
showing tho inscription on one side and
a bird in relief on tho other. New
methods of work havo been brought to
light. Tho length of exposure has boon
reduced from ono hour to a few min
utes. Tho heavy charges of electricity
which destroyed so many Crookes’ tubes
havo boon found to bo unnecessary.
Moreover, tho tubo itself is not re
quired, and an ordinary incandescent
lamp suffices if a metal plato is placed
at a sufficient distance from it to catch
tho cathode or x rays.
But one of tho most important appli]
cations has Leon made surgically. By
placing a subloct to ba examined before
a scroen faced with a mixture of barium,
platinum and cyannm and allowing tho
rays from a tubo enclosed in a dark
cloth to traverse tho body, tho impres
sion can bo seen by tho eve on tho sur
face of tho scroon, which is rendered
fiourcseont where tho rays fall uninter
rupted upon it, and the surgeon is con
sequently enabled to move tho subject
freely before tho screen and examine tho
interior of tho body for foreign sub
stances or hurtful growths and distorted
bones.

ter of education. Signor Gianturco;

The situation at Ery throa is very grave.
