A great country like this, with its in
finite resources, commercially uud

The agi’icultural products of America
would almost feed tine world. 1 he
granaries and corn-cribs »;f the west
ern states are fuller than they ever were
before in the history of America.
Thousands and thousands of these cribs
and granaries ar< < n along iadeo' I

much of the corn in the west. Com

Some jieoplc have loo much tongue
—they talk too much. They are like
the long-tongued woman of whom it
was said shiv could sit. in her parlor
and lick the skillet in the kitchen. We
have a few over-worked lawyers and
business men, but I know very few
over-worked farmers. And yet they
say they are the most down-troddenest
people on the face of the earth, for
getting that it is the fellow who is ly
ing on his back who gets down-trod
den.
By the way, 1 saw a sight at Marion,
Ilk, the other day that I had never
seen before in all my peregrination-.
I went into a poultry butchering es
tablishment from which they shipcjir
loads of chickens dressed for the mar
ket. With a friend 1 walked into a
room where the chickens were being
dressed. 1 saw they were picking the
chickens without scalding them, a we
:ill doat home. The process was unique.
1 saw tin' feathers eoniing off tlvni as
easy, or more easy, than ihey do fior.i
scalded chickens. I began to inquire
into the process. 1 s:tid: “flow can
you ]>i"k those chickens so easily w it li
mit scalding them?”
One of the experts at work said:
“We butcher them so they turn loose
their feathers. Mow." he said, as he
picked up a live chic ken from the coop,
“see if you can pull tin se feathers."
I tri 'd, but ! couldn't hwlg'* them.
Be then too!; a sharp pointed instru
ment and seemed to tickle the roof
of the chicken's mouth, and then ke
slipped the sharp-pointed instrument
right under tin* eye of the chicken into
its brain, and then le* held 1 he chiekeu
towards me and said: “Mow see if
you can pull then:."
I took hold of the feathers and they
slipped off by the handful. I said:
“What’s this?" lie jeplied: "You
