Some Short, Some Shorter and all Too Short for a Heading, Yet None Too Short to Mention. J. B. Kirby who had such a terrl- able full from the wall of the new mill some ten days ago, we are glad to say, is rapidly recovering. Wo received a communication from J. L. S., Etta Jane, which arrived too late for this week’s publication but will receive attention next week. Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Jones are the happy possessors of a “new girl.” J. D. says it is the “finest in the land.” The Ledger congratulates the happy parents. The man who is not willing to pay $1.00 a year for a first-class paper ought to die and be buried in his ig norance. Yet some people are mean enough to borrow their neighbor’s paper every week. Don’t be a clam, but get in the band wagon. We learn that Tilman R. Gaines is planning to publish the Lyceum Magazine at Gaffney. Its first two volumns of twenty-four numbers wore published in Asheville. It is expected that number one, volume 3 will be valuable to our growing city. Chief Camp received a telegram Monday from H. L. C. Murph, Trial Justice, of Pacolet, to arrest Joe Mc Daniel and Hamp Lowry. The two men drove in town in a hack to which was attaohed two mules and were arrested and locked up until Tuesday when officers arrived and took them to Pacolet. The charge against them could not be ascertained. Rev. W. S. Holmes, of this city, has been elected rector of St John's Episcopal church at Florence and has commenced his work there. While w’e are sorry to have such a good man leave us we congratulate Florence and St. John’s church on securing him. Mr. Holmes has the confidence and respect of our entire people and we bespreak for him a bright future. Rev. B. P. Robertson will preach Sunday morning on the “Struggle of faith with the perfect government of God.” Rev. J. R. Edwards will preach for Mr. Robertson in the even ing. Mr. Robertson will be at Paco let attending the installation of Rev. W. J. Langston as pastor of Trough Shoals Baptist church. Mr. Langs ton succeeds Rev. J. D. Huggins as pastor at that place. •• - To Resume Operation. The Baptist High School of this place will open Jan., 6. 1896. The school will be under the management of J. E. Edwards, Ph. B., assisted by two competent instructors, Prof. W. H. Ross for intermediate and Miss Fannie Jones for primary. The first three months will be the free school term during which time there will be no tuition fees for those between the ages of six and twenty- one except for those from other dis tricts not entitled to the public fund. There will be no “pu'*” in the policy of the school but rather an earnest effort to give satisfaction by solid work,and they want no patronage ex cept that which is deserved. • • Several Marriages. The marriage last night of Mr. Harry A. Etheridge to Miss Bessie, daughter of Capt. and Mrs. W. H. Richardson, of Limestone, was the social event of the season. The late ness of the hour precludes the possi bility of a more extended notice this week. On December 24, at 11:30 a. m., Miss Mamie Lop Daniels, of Thick- ety, and Mr. W7 A. Xoblet, of Green ville, were married at the residence of the bride’s parents. On December 26, at 8:30 p. m., at the residence of the bride’s parents, Miss Kate Thomas and Mr. James Scruggs, of Gaffney, were united in the holy bonds of matrimony, Rev. B. P. Robertson officiated. -• —- Installation of Masonic Officers. The following officers were installed to serve Granard Lodge No. 186 for the next ensuing masonic year by Past Master H. Movements Of People You Know And People You Don’t Know. Kenneth Baker, of Prosperity, and Walter Baker, of Peaks, S. C., like the dutiful sons they are, spent the Christmas with their parents here, and were heartily welcomed by their many friends in Gaffney. Happy Charlie Petty, of Charlotte, spent Christmas with relatives and friends in and around Gaffney. Mr. and Mrs. 8. M, Rice and chil dren, of Union, are visiting Mrs. Ricos’ parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. A. Sarratt, on Limestone Street. Our friend Jesse Burton, of Union, was in the city this week. All Gaff ney was glad to see him. Jesse looks mighty natural around here and it does Union’s old timers good to hear him brag on that town. Misses Bulah Putnam, of Double Shoals. N. C., and Edelh Thompson, of Sticy Shoals, N. C., accompanied by Messrs. T. C. Gardner and George T, Putnam visited Wm. T. Thompson lust week. Prof. John R. Mack, the new pres ident of Cooper-Limestone Institute, with his family, arrived in the city last Thursday. The Ledger heartily welcomes Prof. Mack to our city and we predict for him and the Institute a prosperous career. Mrs. W. W. Thomas visited rela tives in Spartanburg during the hol idays. Landrum Brown was home for the holidays. Mr. and Mrs. J. I). Cudd spent part of the holidays with Mrs. Cudd’s mother in Gaffney. Sid Walker came home for Christ mas and put right off to the exposi tion. John White and Fred Turner were home for Christmas. Gordon Pruit is boss weaver at Tucapau Mills. Mr. Pruit once lived Gaffney where he has many friends. He is a Union County boy and is forging to the front in his line. “Clint” Vassey. of Ezells, S. C., is in the city visiting his wife’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. S. Perry. Mrs. C. W. Tolleson, of Spartan burg, is visiting relatives in the city. Miss Mamie Poole, who has been spending a portion of the holidays with her brother Will in the Queen City, has returned to Gaffney. T. W. Hendricks, of Home, will move to Gaffney this or next week. H. B. Robertson, one of Gowdey- ville’s industrious farmers, was in the city yesterday on business. Charles Gaffney, of Cherokee, was in the city Tuesday and exhibited to us several old and rare coins of this and other nationalities. Among them was a United States gold twen ty-live cents piece. Miss Annie Sarratt, who has been visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. A. Sarratt, during the Christmas holidays, has returned to Union to resume her studies at the Clifford college. Misses Isla and Nettie McKinzie, of Dillon, S. C., spent Christmas with Misses Juliet and Lizzie Lip scomb. These young ladies were much admired by our people and we bet some of our folks will be in Dil lon before long.
