No one who has not been through the
ordeal, can possibly have any concep
tion of the terrible fear and dread occa
sioned by the anticipation of a surgical
operation. Well grounded, too, per
haps, in a majority of cases, for the keen
blade of the surgeon is too often used
indiscreetly, and where it cannot possi
bly do any good.
It is a little less than folly to submit
to a surgical operation for a disease of
the olood, and such a course always
proves either fatal or useless.
Mr. Lincolu Nelson, of HartviUe, Mo.,
had an interesting experieuce with the
doctors recently, and was on the verge
of a painful surgical operation. Ht
writes: “I hereby add my unqualified
endorsement of your excellent remedy
S. S. S. For six years I have been a
sufferer from a scrofulous affection of
the glands of my neck, and all efforts ol
physicians in Washington, D. C.,
Springfield, 111., and St. Louis, failed to
reduce the enlargement. After six
months’ constant treatment here my
physician urged me to submit to a re
moval of the glaud. At this critical mo
ment a friend recommended S. S. S..
and laying aside a deep-rooted preju
dice against all patent medicines, I be
gan its use. Before I had used one bot
tle the enlargement began to disappear,
and now it is entirely gone, though I am
not through with my second bottle yet.
Had I only used your S. S. S. long age.
I would have escaped years of misery
and saved over $150. If this endorse
ment will serve you in any way use it.”
This experience is like that of all who
suffer with deep-seated blood troubles.
The doctors can do no good, and even
their resorts to the knife prove either
fruitless or fatal, S. S. S. is the only
real blood remedy, it gets at the root of
the disease and forces it out perma
nently.
Cancer is another disease for which
the doctors at once resort to the knife,
and there has never been a case cured
by an operation. S. S. S. has made
some wonderful cures of Cancer, full ac
counts of which will be sent out upon
application.
S S. S. is a blood remedy for real
blood troubles; it cures the most obsti
nate cases of Scrofula, Eczema, Cancer,
Rheumatism, etc., which other so-called
blood remedies fail to touch. S. S. S.
gets at the root of the disease and forces
it out permanently. Valuable books
will be sent free to any address by the

PAUL V. GAFFNEY,
Last Thursday evening at 8:30
o’clock at the residence of the bride’s
parents, Mr. Paul V. Gaffney and Miss
Minnie Harris were united in the
holy bonds of matrimony, the Rev. B.
P. Robertson, of the Baptist eburch,
officiating.
The marriage was a quiet home af
fair, embracing simplicity and beauty
in its character. At exactly 8:30
o’clock Miss Lizzie Lipscomb began
to play Mendelssohn’s wedding march
■upon the piano and the young couple
inarched into the parlor, where in Hie
presence of a few of their relatives
and friends they were made man and
wife. The ceremony used by Rev.
Air. Robertson was short and pretty.
Immediately after the ceremony
the guests were ushered into the din
ing room and were served with a
sumptuous repast. Then back to
ihc parlors the company went and
the remainder of the evening was
made merry by the friends of the
happy couple who bad gathered in
honor of the event.
Mr. and Mrs. Gaffney t 00k the
12:20 for the Gate City where they
remained until Saturday taking in
the exposition.
The bride was attired in a lovely
costume of white with whie kid slip
pers and glove to match and a rose in
her hair. The groom wore a becom
ing suit of black, white kid gloves
and patent leather shoes.
The bridal presents were numer
ous, handsome and appropriate, al
though the latest fashionable con
ventionalities were not strictly com
plied with—that of only the immedi
ate membersof the family donating—
because there were a number of pres
ents from friends not related.
The groom is a promising young
business man of this city who is
successfully conducting a wholesale
and retail confectionery store and
is full of energy and pluck. The
bride is one of Gaffney’s prettiest
and most amiable young ladies and
has a host of admiring friends.
Mr. and Mrs. Gaffney will reside at
the old Gaffney residence on Grenard
street, with Mr. Gaffney’s mother.
A reception was tendered Mr. and
Mrs. Gaffney ac the residence of Mr.
Gaffney’s mother on Saturday even
ing at which were quite a number of
invited guests. The evening was
most delightfully spent.
A gentleman who witnessed the
ceremony paid the young couple the
compliment of saying they were the
handsomest couple he had ever seen
united, and he is a man who has
seen quite a number of marriages.
May they live long and prosper
and be happy always is the wishes of
their numerous friends.

About t wo weeks ago there alighted
from the train at the doopt a dapper
| little rdlow with a heavy drooping
Attended I biaek mustache who was aceompa-

overalls. The crowd were bdl pos
ters of the ‘•American Aeronautic
Company." Teams were engaged
from a local livery stable and the
posters set out to bill the surround
ing country for miles and miles with
exceedingly well written posters an
nouncing that on Thursday, Decem
ber the 5th, there would be ‘‘a grand
free exhibition of the American Aero
nautic Company in which the lead
ing artists of Europe and America
would take part." On Thursday the
town was crowded with an amazed
people who wondered how in the
world so grand and elaborate an ex
hibition could be given without
money and without price hut some
of them became more amazed when
they learned how it was done. The
management hud arranged a •‘side
show’’ for which an admission fee of
ten cents was charged. On the in
side there were three features that
usually go with “side-shows" accom
panying circuses and two "fake"
gambling apparatus, out of which
there was no more show for a man to
get his money after once put in than
there is for the lost soul to escape
from the coniines of hades. Several
well-known characters who thought
they understood the game and hud a
little more sense than the fellow who
run it are out faom $5 to $45 by their
knowledge. On the outside a blonde
mustache* gentleman with a eland
expression, an oily tongue ami
slick lingers rolie'd up fives,
tons and twenty’s in a roll of white
paper and deftly exchanged them for
a simillar roll which contained green
or blue paper and sold them for fifty
cents each, lie would glibly tell the
innocents “that some contain prize*,
and some do not,” at the same time
rolling or unrolling one that had a
bill in it, hut woe to the unsophisti
cated individual who purchased one,
This pleasant and perfect remedy, so
delightful t<? take, so refreshing and
exhilarating, stands in highest favor
with all who know it best, as the great

sexes, of all ages and in all conditions.

for, aids there was no "filthy lucre”
therein. After they ha l run their
little game a short while a Lkuoku
representative dropped down on
them and immediately reported them
to Mayor Littlejohn, who lost no
time in going over and stopping their
swindling games. About 4 o’clock
the balloon went up. A daring aero-
nol was swinging to the trapese and
when lie had reached an altitude of
about live or six hundred feet lie cut
loose Ids parachute and descended to
earth. The balloon went some higher
and when the hot air began to cool it
likewise came down, landing in the
vacant lot in front of the Limestone
Inn. The crowd, which iiad become
thoroughly chilled by waiting four
hours in a brisk December wind, then
repaired to their homes, hut those
who ••hit" at the faker’s game were
perhaps wiser than when they went.
They done the crowd for from $300
to $500.
