It is very often that the most insig
nificant symptoms are forerunners of
the most violent disease. There is
not a more destructive disease than
Cancer, and in a majority of cases it
is first indicated by a very small scab
or sore, to which no attention is at
tracted, until it before long develops
into most alarming conditions.
Here is such a case, where the first
symptoms were too small to be noticed
for quite a time. Mr. J. B. Arnold be
longs to one of the oldest and best
families of Carolina; he is well and
favorably known throughout South
Carolina, and has resided at Green
wood for years Cancer is hereditary
in the family, an aunt on each side
having died from it. Several years
ago a small spot, like a tiny ulcer,
about the size of a bird-shot, appeared
just under his left eye, above the cheek
bone. He thought nothing of it for
some time, until it began to grow rap
idly, spreading all the time, and de-
ing the flesh as it went.

A Serious
Accident
MR. J. B. ARNOLD.
He says: “It gave me a great deal
of pain—those sharp, darting pains so
characteristic of cancer. I took many
so-called blood medicines, without the
slightest effect, and sought the help of
the best physicians, but they did me
no good; one told me, however, that I
was incurable and had better make my
arrangements accordingly. I was on
the verge of despair, when Dr. J. L.
Miller, one of the leading druggists of
my town, recommended S. S. S. The
first bottle seemed to make me worse,
but Dr. Miller told me this was a fav
orable symptom, and by the time I had
taken the second bottle, the cancer be
gan to discharge, and as I continued
this became quite profuse, and kept up
for some time. Then it gradually
grew less, and after awhile ceased al
together, and to my delight the place
dried up and is cured entirely, so that
nothing remains but a scar.
“I consider S. S. S. a boon to suffer
ing humanity, and feel that I owe my
life to it, as the cancer had made such
progress when I began S. S. S. that my
death was declared to be only a matter
of a very short time. The cure ef
fected in my case is considered by
every one most remarkable, and clearly
demonstrates the fact that S. S. S.
does cure hereditary cancer. No one
who is afflicted with this dreadful dis
ease can afford to fail to give S. S. S.
a.trial, for that is all that is necessary
to convince them of its virtues.”
The above is but one of many re
markable cures being daily made by
S. S. S. Cancer is becoming alarm
ingly prevalent, and manifests itself
in such a variety of forms, that any
sore or scab, it matters not how small,
which does not readily heal up and
disappear, may well be regarded with
suspicion.
The fact that S. S. S. cures heredi
tary cancer, which is considered in
curable, places it without an equal as
a sure cure for all manner of real
blood diseases, such as Scrofula. Ec
zema, Contagious Blood Poison, or
any other form of bad blood.—Atlanta

The Citizens Building and Loan Asso
ciation.
Few people realize the great advan
tage of a well managed building and
loan association. Our local associa
tion was organized last July and has
been the direct means of building six
or eight neat residences in Gaffney,
and lias applications for several more.
It is a great help to the borrower,
lender and the town generally. If
you desire to own your home, sub
scribe for stock at once. By small
payments each week you can mature
your stock and pay back your loan
with the money you now pay out for
house rent. The Citizens Building
and Loan Association will on Janu
ary 1st ’96, open hooks of subscrip
tion for the second series of stock
and every one should take some of
this stock. The investment is safe
and profitable, and t* e association is
composed of our very best citizens.
It is strictly mutual and every sub
scriber helps some worthy man or
woman to build and own a home.

The Right Kind ot People.
Tuk Lkdgkk carried an ud. for the
Dr. Miles Medical Company of Elk
hart, Ind., for twelve m.*nlhs. We
never rendered a statement or wrote
them a letter of any description, lie-
cause just as regular as clockwork
every three months wo received a
check for the quarter’s advertising,
and they said they “did not require
a statement or receipt.” That the
work has been entirely satisfactory
the following will test if\ :
Ledger. Gaffney, S. C.:

of lust year’s contract, kindly return
same by return mail. Please use old

very truly.
Dr. Miles Medical Co.
That we desire to keep such people
among our advertisers is attested by
the fact that Dr. Miles’ udvertiM-
ment appears again in this issue of
The Ledger. The Dr. Miles Com-
pony are among the most reliable
people in America and their prepara
tion is one of merit.

Thanksgiving.
Thanksgiving Day was duly oele-
brated and every place of business in
town was closed the entire day.
There was services at the several
churches and they were well attended.
The clerks were thankful for a day
off, the merchants were thankful for
a good fall trade; the sweethearts
were thankful that their beaux could
be with them, us were also wives and
little children because husband and
father could he at home and The
Ledger was thankful because it was
able to give to a generous public a
complete twelve-page newspaper
replete with good news and well
written advertisements which were a
credit to Gaffney and her people.
“A Man of the People.”
Rev. C. E. Robertson is not only a
preacher hut a man, and truly “a
man of the people.” He and his
family have been in Gaffney less than
two years and already they have en
deared themselves to all. On Thanks
giving evening Mr. and Mrs. Robert
son gave a supper to a number of
their young lady acquaintances. Al
though no ‘‘stags” were admitted we
are told that the young ladies spent a
most pleasant evening, and we are in
clined to believe it to be so because
Mr. and Mrs. Robertson know how to
entertain.

A Gaffney Contractor Abroad.
J. G. Galloway and his force of
workmen have completed the roofing
of the Rutherford cotton mills of
Rutherfordton, N. C., and have re
turned to the city. Mr. Galloway
gave the Rutherfordton people an
extra good job and they were highly
pleased with the work of Gaffney’s
contractor and Gaffney mechanics.
But then nothing else could be ex
pected of Gaffney because we do the
best of everything we undertake.
Remember
Is approaching, you will soon be
gin to puzzle your mind, what
shall 1 get and, next, where will
I get it. We want to suggest a
few things.

A Tremendous Scheme.
J. Q. Little last week received a
letter from an old friend in Arkansas,
E. L. Thomson, who has a tremend
ous scheme on hand. He proposes
to raffle 2,000 acres of land fifteen or
twenty mules and horses, corn suffi
cient to run the place a year, u large
stock of hogs and cattle ami 100 bales
of cotton for the sum of $25,000. He
proposed to raffle it at the exposition
provided J. Q. would undertake the
job of getting up the raffle. How
ever, Mr. Little, while quite a sport,
has not yet made up his mind to un
dertake so gigantic a scheme as that.
Another Correction.
In last week’s Ledger we inad
vertently wrote Miss Davis when it
should have been Miss Kendrick, in
regard to the art department of
Cooper-Limestone. Miss Davis re
tired during the summer and Miss
Kendrick succeeded her, but that
made the display none the less credit
able, for Miss Kendrick ranks high as
an art teacher.
The Ledger regrets very much
that errors like this should happen
but we are ever ready to correct any
misstatement concerning anybody or
anything.

Death of Mr. Jas. Cook.
Mr. James Cook. Hr., who lives
about uine miles from Gaffney in
what is known as the “brick house,”
below Corinth, died at his home Sat
urday morning at 7 o’clock. Mr.
Cook was between eighty and ninety
years of age. He leaves four chil
dren to mourn his loss: James, Smith
and John Cook and Mrs. Sallie
Baine. The remains were interred at
the Tate grave yard Sunday.
Mr. Cook was well and favorably
known and had lived a life^ 'unusual
activity.

There are two reasonable things
which everybody should do: take
good care of one’s health ; and if lost,
regain it quickly, and to this every
body will agree. And there are a

agreed that for both purposes Sim

as a remedy for use in teething, it is
