The Thornwell Orphanage.
This institution is a family school
for orphan chihlr *n, who arc left in
poverty hy the death of their parents.
It is located in Clinton, South Caro
lina, in the upper or piedmont sec
tion of the State. The heailhfulness
of l ‘ e same is shown hy the fact that
in twenty years there have been only
! three deaths among the orphans.
The children are received from any
i section of the Union and from any
! denomination. There were 130 or-
! plums under its care last year from j
twelve diUVrent states and ten de
nominations. It is however under
Presbyterian control.
Orphans are not legally surrended
to Hie institution, hut are admitted
to he educated and sent out prepared
to take care of themselves. They are.
therefore, taught to use both head
and hard, the industrial course be
ing full and thorough and the school
work being equally satisfactory.
The support of this institution is j
wholly voluntary. It is almost with
out endowment, depending upon the
eootl will of the people for its main*
tainanee. Gifts of provisions, cloth
ing arid money, in response to notices
like this constitute its source of in
come. During the past year the fam
ily was maintained and all salaries
paid. And that has been its wondcr-
fi-l experience for twenty years.
Thanksgiving and Christinas days
are here. Surely this is a good time
to remember the orphans. Gifts
should he sent to Rev. Wm. P. Ja
cobs, Thornwell Orphanage, Clinton,
S. C.
