"Well, parson, I reckon i*oa left your

“No. I am a man of deeds, not

Such a diabolical expression shad
owed Dodd’s features as ho breathed

FRANK GREY ORCUKKS AN AIM’OINTSfEXT
AND LOSES IT.
"And this is a Sabbath day in great
new liabylon of Chicago," Grey mused
us he wended his way one Sunday
morning to the post ofiicc. He was not
htrail-lajod in his opinions nor in
any way puritanical, but the utter dis-
r 'yard of that Day of Host he had from
childhood been accustomed to observe
j. rrcd his feelings strangely. The city
was “running full blast.” Theaters,
concert-hulls, "dives” of every descrip
tion were open to the public, who
mvaed bent upon taking every ad van-
if * of enjoyment they offered.
i’o Grey the scene was hideous. It

llard-hnllH and gambling dens, and
drank themselves into a state of leth
argy. It ».vas u vulgar, senseless, be-
; hind-the-sereen kind of a Sunday,
i Frank Grey bad resolved upon a
journalistic career. He felt that lie
could write, and as he was temperate,
energetic and modestly willing to be*
gin at the bottom of the profession and
work his way up, he did not anticipate
much trouble in securing a position,
and with this end in view he had writ
ten to the managing editor of every
newspaper in the city a letter of appli
cation for immediate employment, if
needs be, volunteering to give his serv
ices for nothing at the start.
When he reached the post ofllcc he
took his place in the long lino of ex
pectant men patiently taking their
turn of inquiry at the little window.
It might be ten minutes before his
chance wcrald come, so he spent the
time in scanning Hie features of tho
men near him, speculating on their lots
in life, for they were, of course, all like
himself, strangers, and probably nine
out of every ton men who had come to
this Mecca of the destitute to seek em
ployment.
His attention was especially attracted
to the person immediately in front of
him—a tall, broad-shouldered, hand
some young man. with a face expree-
Sfve of intense anxiety.
“Algernon Granville?” the stranger
asked when his turn came.
The clerk hastily ran over a pile of
letters and “'took his head.
“Are you sure?"
“Nothing for you. Pass on,” woe the
curt response.
Grey was sure he saw the young
man's face flush and then grow deathly
pale os he strode away
TO BE CONTINUED NEXT WEEK.
There is no medicine so often
needed in every home and so admira
bly adapted lo the purpose for which
it is intended, as Chamberlain’s
I’alti Halm. Hardly a week passes
but some member of the family needs
it. A toothache or headache may he
cured by it. A touch of rheumatism
or neuralgia quieted. The severe
pain of u burn or scald promptly re
lieved and the sore healed In mueh
less time than when medicine has to
be sent for. A sprain may he
promptly treated before inflamma
tion sets in. which insures a cure in
about one-third of the time otherwise
required. Cuts and bruises should
receive immediate treatment before
the parts beeome swollen, which can
only be done when Pain Balm is kept
at hand A sore throat may be
^ured before it becomes serious. A
troublesome corn may be removed
by applying it twice a day for a week
or two. A lame back may be cured
and several days of valuable time
saved or a pain in the aide or chess
relieved without paying a doctor
hill. Procure a bO cent bottle at
once and you will never regret It.
