Mrs. M. J. Holmes, wife of our
venerable townsman, B. F. .Holmes,
mention of whose illness appeared in
last week’s Lkdgku, died ot her home
on Tuesday morning at an early hour,
after an illness of about ten days.
Mrs. Holmes hud not been in robust
health in many years and was too
weak to withstand an attack which
would have been light to a person of
strong constitution.
Mrs. Holmes was Hie daughter of
P. I*. Pearson, and was in her fiftieth
year. Shu had been a consecrated
Christian woman for many years,
having joined the Methodist church
in iStlU, and was universally beloved
by those who knew her. She had
been married twice and was the
mother of ten children, all of whom
survive her.
The sympathy of the entire coin-

The city council, after maturely

plan of Architect Hook for the city
hall, which it first adopted, and has
now accepted the one presented by
Messrs; Ausfeld A Seiz, of Atlanta.

“Little” Mac Thompson lias been
prospecting on his lands on Thickoty
in Union county for some years. He

Lately he has found the vein which
is very rich. Mr. Thompson bus
bought a fine stamp mill and will
commence mining Ids ore at once
with every prospect of success.
Mrs. Wm. H. Felton, chairman of

the Awards Committee of the same
department, and one of the first five
women appointed by the Exposition
Company, and composed entirely of
gentleman, has been invited by the
| National Agriculture Congress, which

Miss Kate Montgomery, a student
of Cooper-Limestone Institute and
daughter of Capt. John Montgomery,
of Spartanburg, died at the Institute
last Monday morning at t> o’clock
after an illiuess of a few days.
Miss Montgomery was endowed
with all the qualities of a pure and
loveable womanhood which made her
alike popular with teachers and stu
dents and all with whom she came
in contact. As she was Jovfcd she is
mourned. ,
Her remains were carried to Spar
tanburg the same afternoon and was
accompanied to the depot at this
place by the entire corps of teachers
and all the students of the In
stitute, and a large concourse of our
citizens The poll hearers were
Messrs. Tom Brown, Charley Humph
ries, Wm. Wilkins, Claud Rosa, Geo.
Doggett and Dr. Chas. Lipscomb.
The remains were buried at It) o’clock
Tuesday at Spartanburg. The fam
ily of Miss Montgomery has the
sympathy of all our people.
Prof. H. P. Griffith, Miss Juliet
Lipscomb, Misses Dean and Coker of
the Institute accompanied the re
mains to Spartanburg.
