Heart Disease 30Yrs!
Short Breath, Palpitation.
Mr. 0. W. McKinsey, postmaster of
Kokomo, Ind., and a brave ex-soldier,
says: “I had been severely troubled
with heart disease ever sinco leaving
the army at the close of the late war.
I was troubled with palpitation and
shortness of breath. I amid not
sleep on my left side, and had pain
around my heart. I became so ill
that I was much alarmed, and for
tunately my attention>was called to
Dr. Miles’ Heart Cure
I decided to try it. The first bottle
made a decided improvement in my
condition, and five bottles have com
pletely cured me.”

[Correspondence of Thk Lkdoeb.I
Etta Jane. S.C., August 20.—Since
my last we have had a good deni of
rain and several other ops and downs
that I might mention as news this
week but i must leave olT several for
want of space.
Last week Supervisor Scott let out
the contract to build an iron bridge
at Skull Shoals on 1'acolet, t he entire
cost of which will be .tV.HK). Messrs.
Pott man, of Abbeville county, and
Kraft, of Georgia, got the contract.
The bridge is to be built by the loth
of December. The Thomson Mill
bridge, on Thicket y, was bid off by
John Blackwood for repairing at
$87.50.
Capt. J. N. King is visiting friends
in this neighborhood. He has many
friends here as lie has everywhere he
is known. He is a walking library
and one of the best fellows we ever
saw.
Tiie election' passed oil lust week
very quietly, i - little notice was
taken of it anyway, as tilings were
practically all oneway.
Our thanks are due Misses Fannie
Kendrick and Noah I : ce for some
choice peaches. -Our c untry never
had a better crop of n 'hms, fruit,
corn, etc., than we now nave. In
many places cotton will bo a blank
compared with the crop of former
years.
Messrs, Clary <k Son, of the Corinth
section, have opened up a stock of
goods in this section.
James Garner has recouped suffi
ciently to turn out to the bridge let
tings.
Your correspondent had a pleasant
visit last week from Rev Mr. Gra
ham, of the York Baptht High
School for Boys and Girls. He speaks
very highly of the prospects of the
school.
Clias. Bolt, of Union, gave us a call
Iasi week on his way to the D.nyton-
ville neighborhood. Charley is one
of our very best friends and a porfec!
gentleman, too, as all who come in
social or busbies contact with him
will agree.

don’t think that any fair-minded, im
partial reader can torture what 1 said

its pastor or its work. I am not tho
man to be drawn into a fruitless news
paper controversy over a church mat

notoriously ignorant. Neither do I
propose to slubber over a theory that
stands in contradiction with the com

Th* Wind l , rc''?ill is a stmt round to Bo
IlartnloHH.
The old belief that projectiles some
times kill men in battle without hitting
! them must bo. abandoned in view of re
cent scientific experiments. It was for
merly supposed that the air 00mpressed
and driven before the projectile, and
technically called “the wind of the
shot,” was capable oi striking a fatal
blow, and even army surgeons have as
sented to this theory.
•But. says Youth’s Companion, ex
periments have shown that tie air
driven by a projectile, while capable of
being in:-!::; 'rncously photograph' d in
the form of a wave, does not possess
sufficient energy to produce any de
structive effect.
Another theory which recent invest!-
; gallons have overturned is that the ex-
: plosive effect sometimes exhibited by
j bullets is due to compressed air driven
into the wound,
Experience shows that the appear
ance of explosion arises from the rui-
turc of the substance penetrated by the
bullet. If tins substance is plastic or
1 watery, the impulse of the projectile is
f distributed laterally in all directions
among its particles, and they are driven
asunder.
• Such an effect has been noticed In
battle when bullets have entered tho
i brain, and accusations of using explo
sive projectiles, contrary to the comity
of nations, have been based upon them.
' By firing bullets into wet dough, every
Indication of an explosion has been pro
duced, although the same bullets, fired
