our coast . 1 his is important to us as
a nation for more reasons than the
fact that, in case of war. we have a
means of exit and ingress nearly all
along our Atlantic and gulf coast.
We well remember that the small
steamboats that used to ply between ,
I lean fort and Charleston, and along
t he < ieorgia coast to Fornandina and
Jacksonville, Fla. were often delayed
in their trips on account of stress of
weather. The reasons given were
that they took the imierroute. Skirt
ing our coast, fr -in the New England
states to Mexico, are out lying islands
formed mainly by alluvial deposits,
brought from the hill country and
stopped by tin se:'. 1 Jet ween them

Perhaps the most noted ol these

SKILL IN SURGERY.
Governor W. Atkinson, of
Georgia, is passing through a severe
ordeal. Had his severe attack occur
red ten years ago. he would, in all
probability, have already joined
the majority.
Tho surgeon’s knife is now used
freely, and without dread, wiieic r,
few years hack the patient s condi
tion would have been pronounced
hopeless.
In Governor Atkinson s ease the
conditions wen somewhat dill'ercnt.
The knife was used by skill' ll hands,
but the patient did not respond a.-i
was hoped; indeed seven eminent
physicians, time and again in consul
tation, pronounced that he could not
recover; that the end was near. Hut
ii was not. IJeyond all expectation
thi' patient rallied, and is far on the
road to ncovcry.
There is no doubt that the world
ha.; gained largely by encouraging
those who devote their lives to discov
ering better ways of doing common
things, and bringing the “impossi
ble” wit bin the range of possibility.
Who can say that this or that is
impossible? “It must be done,” gen
erally opens the way.
Who knows but that, after all, the
very skill that has been gained may
bean incentive the more readily to
resort to the knife when milder meas
ures would do as well.
May there not be surgeons who
have a passion for using tlie knife,
just as the expert “shot” likes to
show his skill, just for the sport of it.
If there h such aside, it is out of
place in dealing with human life.
There is >miict hing grand, yes heroic,

tiahney at si
morning. We not in d hut few people
up in t iwn. hut as soon as we in
tiic country we saw buggies .landing
in tlie yards and horses with harness
on them making ready for church.
Wc thought they w re going to Ei-
bcthel. We found the roads well
worked in Spurtanhurgcounty, but in
1 nion county there had been no
work done on the roads. The hill on
tin* North side of Thiekcly is verry
rough. Large rocks protruding out
of the ground. A little powder used
thin* would make the road hetter.
The crops are all in good condition
and well worked and there’s a good
stand. The cotton is small hut
growing. Tim corn looks well. Joe
Fhillips and John D. Jctferies have
tlie largest corn that wc saw, and K.
H. Spears tlie best cotton. Mr.
Spears will soon have blooms.
Wheat and oats are fine. Jack Eil-
llcjohn has a line field of wheat. Its
not a patch of wheat, hut a iield of
some twenty or thirty acres, like tho
old time wheat field.
There had been a good ruin hegin-
itig at W. M. Tate’s and extending as
far as Kdton and we don’t know how
much further. After spending a
pleasant day with friends we started
home at I o'clock in the evening.
To our surprise we met the mayor of
Galfney, not alone though. We sup
pose he had been to Elhethel or some
where. We have been told that he
was hipnotized or went oil in a swoon
and that In didn't know anything
from Dawkins bridge to Galfney.
Just as he got to Galfney he overtook
Smith Cook and family, who had
been to W. Mabry's in Asbury neigh
borhood. This caused him to raise
up and some faint idea struck him
that he was in Gaffney. The mayor
had better tako someone with him
from Gaffney when he goes in the
Gowdeysvillo neighborhood. There
are some deep holes by the road side.
