MECKLENBURG’S GOOD ROADS.
Even tlie rains that have fallen
within the past week have made our
roads unpleasant for travel. There
are not as many holes ns during
the winter, nor is the mud as deep,
but there is a plenty of it. We re
member marching over some of the
roads of Mecklenburg count j. that in
which is situated the thriving city of
Charlotte, and wondering if roads
could be worse anywhere. Now, some
of those roads, at least, have been
worked, not as we work them in
Houth Carolina, but scientifically.
Hoads have been graded: powerful
engines with heavy wheels roll over
them hack and forth until the sur
face has been leveled and hardened
to receive the crushed rock, laid down
according to McAdam.
Immense crushers are used for
breaking the rock, found near the
highway or purchased from the land
owners adjoining. The rock after
being crushed is graded as to size and
fineness. The larger pieces arc first
placed on ihe level, hard surface; on
these are placed smaller, until the
surface, after being repeatedly rolled,
is firm and hard enough for the se
verest travel. Now what is the re
sult? Three times the weight can
now he hauled and wieh greater ease
and comfort to man and beast.
The entire adjacent country is tak
ing on new life in its varied activities;
property lias advanced over one hun
dred per cent.; new indust ries are be
ing started, and Charlotte is helped
as even Charlotte never before was
helped.
And this is only the beginning.
Mecklenburg, the first to declare her
Independence of British rule, thus
setting an example to her neighbors,
is again setting them an example
where independence may be gained
In another way.
Good roads are signs of prosperity.

Two Sides to a Picture.
it .has been said that there is two :
sides to a picture—a bright side and ,
a dark side. Flaw Picker grants it if
you will let him have it this way:
The front or bright side as t Ik* good
side, and the hack or dark side, the
had side.
We are grieved to know that so |
many people prefer looking at. the !
side that was not intended to he |
looked at—the laid side.
See a young man starting out in
this glorious old world of ours which
God has given us to brighten and
make happy. Everybody is ready to
rebuke and criticise him for his errors
and nobody ever speaks a word of
cheer for ids good deeds. Nobody :
save his father and mother have any 1
confidence in him, yea, sometimes
only his mother. He meets numbt rs
daily who turn the dark or had side !
of the picture towards him to dis- :
arm him of his future aims. The
sweet sisters at home turn a cold
shoulder towards him, the brothers
never give a word of encouragement, \
the father never sympathizes wiili
him hut rather scolds if he is over
taken in a fault, none save mot In r is

IRREVERENCE.
There arc many points on which !
the press should he outspoken. Tlie
welfare of our people its a nation and
as individuals depends mainly and
essentially on their relation to the
God who inude them and controls
their destinies. If for no other
reason, wo should reverence his name
us Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
And he who flippantly takes that
holy name on unholy lips deserves
the rebuke that even men can
bestow.
This is bud enough when men in
“low estate,” and without influence
nr position try to raise themselves
into promiiit nee by nithlessly enter
ing the Holy of Holies. J|o\v much
of amusement and anytning that is j
calculated to draw your hoy away |
from home when ho should beat)
home is your rival and you should !
make home more attractive than any 1
place on earth, then, if he does stray
off it won’t he very long till the love
for sweet homo and dear mother will
bring him hack. A disagreeable home i
is to he blamed for son’s wayward- '
ness.
Turn the bright side of the picture, j
cheer and animate rather than dis- i
hearten, speak a word of comfort
