After thirty years a new genera tion has arisen and the complexion has changed North and South. What would have been impossible fifteen or ten years ago is today not only in the region of possibility, but wc stand looking hack at the seal e.l- lixod to a reunited country. The great ma ji:'y i-i •i/- that, having appealed to tin- wm : the sword decided what would other wise have remained an open and vex ing question. We are nearer a cen tralized government than we w re thirty years ago. And the S, mli is better oil now than she was then. Although we knew it not we were bound. The “Old South" had si rv* d its day, its mission was oomph te. A glorious mission it was, hut if it ushered in a brighter and nobier day, a “New South” with possibilities en larging, an undeveloped South with resources almost inexhaustabio,' then the old sliouid rejoice in its lin- ished work. The south of today is only possible because of Hie south that proceeded it. The North is the outcome of an activity that decades backwards, and our united country today is the st ronger, the belter, then on account of the conflicts, the tem pering process through which it lias passed. Let Southern ladies con tinue to decorated the graves of the blue as they lay a floral tribute on the graves of the gray and the heart will expand with the noble senti ment. OBEDIENCE TO LAW. The law-abiding citizen is ever tin loyal citizen. He who wilfully vio lates the law which would throw around him its protecting arms, not only cuts himself aloof from its mis sion of Jove but nurses within his own heart and mind a viper which will he his ruin. If this is so of the ordinary citizen in the ordinary hustle and turmoil of life, with how much more force does it apply to those who are the law executors in t heory, but law breakers in practice. It is a pitiable sight when through prejudice, pride or policy we see one oppose himself to the majority of the law; it is more pitiable still when that one is high in authority yet holds in disobedience to constituted authority. Governor Evans is not making friends to himself, at least among the law loving portion of the citizens of the state. It is possible he may have an alert mind with a wide grasp; that his patriotism may be great, and Ids state pride strong “and al! o’ that,” but in his recent acts he lias shown a lack of that wisdom and experience necessary to till aright the responsi ble position of governor. A little more of the bullitings with fortune or misfortune and a richer experience will be the harvest. B— STATE PRESS ASSOCIATION. Sumter never tiros of doing the j right tiling at the right time.
