Washington, June ft.—The president
has given no indication as to when ho
will announce the changes in his offi
cial family, and it is said that, granted
he has determined on what changes
are to be made, lie will not make the
announcement for some time, out of re
spect to tin* memory of Secretary
Gresham.
The name of Judge Moran, of Chi
cago, which has been added to the list
of possibilities for the otlioe of attor
ney general, seems to have this basis
of possibility behind it. Mr. J. \V.
Doane, of Chicago, a prominet banker
and vice-president of Pullman's Palace
Car company, has been in Washington
several days and is known to be a
strong admirer of Mr. Moran. Mr.
Doane was an intimate friend of Sec
retary Gresham and accompanied the
president and the cabinet to Chicago
on tho Gresham funeral train.
There have been some suggestions
that Acting Secretary ITil, of the state
department with whom the president
was brought into close relations during
the illness of Mr. Gresham, and who
took Mr. Gresham's place at the cabi
net councils during his illness, may
receive promotion to a cabinet office.
Mr. Phi was a leading member of the
Michigan bar before his selection as
assistant secretary of state. lie is a
warm friend of Don M. Dickinsop.

Washington, June ft. The president
yesterday removed from office (’. R,
Morton, of Maine, auditor for the navy
department in the treasury. Ills suc
cessor will be promptly announced.
Washington, June 5.—-Since January
1st the treasury department has lost
within $10,000,000 as much gold as it
gained by the sale of bonds to the llel-
inont-Morgan syndicate. The gold lost
—$55,102,000—was paid out in tin* re
demption of I'nited States notes and
treasury notes, and most, of these notes,
at least 7-8, have been presented for
redemption at New York City.
Since the l>o!d Syndicate Was KIT* cl- it.
On February 8th. the agreement with
the Helmont syndicate went into I'l'eet
and by its terms, the syndicate agreed
to protect the treasury gold as much
as possibly. Of the .$55, K'G.OOO lost
since January tst, but - ft,(ioo.o(K) are
chargeable between February sth ami
June 1st.
During the month of May, gold with
drawn for redemption purposes has ag
gregated $1,000,000, oral the rate of
about $83,000 a day. For the lirst two
days of June, the withdrawals amount
ed to $101,000.
These figures show, in the opinion of
treasury oflieials that the i.elmont-
Morgan syndicate is using all legiti
mate efforts to protect the gold; hut
they also show that more gold is being
withdrawn than is required for ordi
nary business purposes. The syndi
cate has now fulfilled its contract with
in $8,000,000, and it is said to b.- ahead
of its payments. Tin: treasury gold re
serve stands at siiy.150,000, and if with
drawals in large amounts are not made
for redemption purposes, when the
OHO,000 owed hy the syndicate is paid in
the gold reserve will foot up fullysTOO,-
000,000.
Wimt the i-IlTecl Will Stc.
What the effect will be upon the
treasury after the expiration of the
syndicate's contract is a subject that is
not discussed at tin* treasury, but judg
ing from tho past. th>* gold wiin-
drawals will be much heavier than for
the past four months and will material
ly weaken the gold reserve. Aside
from the gold received from the syndi
cate during the past four mouths the
treasury has had sever:*.! other nr.vs
of supply. The gold received from cus
toms has been light, not aggregatin '
one tenth of one per cent. From origi
nal coinage the gold r* vived has ag
gregated several million dollars, wiine
in exchange for silver certitieab. of
small denominations for several of the
crops in the south and west, consider
able gold h; s found its way into the
treasury. I'nderthe treasury regula
tion autliorizing the exchange of the
World’s Fair souvenirs half dollar for
gold, more than -70.000 has been re-
eeived from this source. The supply of
souvenir coin is fast being exhausted.
The amount of paper money pre-ionted
daily at the treasury for redemption in
gold is now being watched with inter
