buildings, yet Charleston has sur
vived them all and is more than
ever the city of inllueiice and power.
Her hospitality is unhounded now as
it was when, to our youthful imagi
nation, to be in Charleston was to he
at the centre of the world.
A new element lui
business iife and h:
changed tie character
prise. There is mole
ling of the foreign element that has
learned to get a great deal and to
hold what it gets.
The battery is still the pride of
Charleston. What is more <h lightful
than to walk that magnificent prom
enade, enjoy the refreshing breeze
that lovingly lloals over the in
coming tide and see the ships at an
chor in her spacious harbor, her heats
with wing-like sails gliding over the
bay, or steamers with mammoth en
gines ploughing the bosom of the
deep. As we stopped before the
bronze monument erected to the
memory of her novelist and poet, W .
Gilmore .Sims, we are reminded of t he
days when he used to stand before
the cadets and give them words of t he pnldic diseonf ent and
wisdom and cheer.
Hut Charleston is a city of ehureh. s
and of Sunday school as well as of
commercial interests. The new
building of the Young Men’s Chris
tian Association is a monument to
their enterprise and to t he Christian
spirit of her young men. Some of
the finest Sunday schools in the stale
are found in Charleston, ’limy are

Cowt’KNS, S. C., April. 1.—It seems
strange what a war there is aliout
dancing, wlien melody and motion is
one of God’s eternal laws. Tired
soldiers will march with more vigor
to the sound of stirring music, anti a
child six months old when held on
its little feet will try its best to keep
time to a tune sung to it. showing it
to be one of the primary instincts of
nature.
“Let every man ho fully persuaded
in his own mind.,’ This is the law
of true liberty. It is wrong, this
making a matter of taste jn others a
misdemeanor, and by that helping to
undo the next to the greatest com
mandment, “Good will to your neigh
bor,” which is the basis of all practi
cal religion. Young people must
have amusements, either dancing or
games and tfieri ran be nothing
more harmless than a nice social
dance, and dancing is more scriptural
than any other form of amusement,
for in both th** Old and New Testa
ment it is spfkan of without disap
proval. in the most beautiful of all
the parables, th<* prodigal son in the
father’s hmise, they are spoken of as
“making merry in the dance,” and
the promises to Israel In Jerusalem
are, “Thou shall again be adorned
with thy tuhrets and shall go forth
in the dances of they that make
merry,” showing clearly that it was
no act of worship, only and express
ion of gladness. Wc make no rules
for any person, and accept none, hut
take the .Scripture rule, "Let every
person be fully persuaded in his own
mind.” feeling there is nothing more
dangerous to the Christian than the
too frequent sin in the human heart
of feeling, “1 arn holier Vllfth thou.’*
