Jackson, Miss., January 10.—The
cotton growers convention met here
yesterday, was called to order by Audi
tor XV. \V. Stone, who introduced the
projector. Hector Lane, commissioner of
agriculture of Alabama, who spoke
of its objects and called to the chair
Novel nor Stone, who had been elected
president at the Montgomery meeting,
lie made a splendid speech requesting
the convention to j>ass practical resolu
tions favoring a decrease in the acre
age of erojis and the encouragement of
cotton factories in the south. Dele
gates were present from some thirty
comities in Mis.i -sijipi, and from Ala
bama. Arkansas. Georgia. Louisiana,
North Carolina and Tennessee.
Hector D Lane, <•* Alabama, was
unanimously elected president of the
National association, (iovernor J. I*.
Eagle, of Arkansas, vice-president,
Robert I>. Eckberge. of Alabama, sec
retary and treasurer.
After a long discussion the following
resolution by I’ij.es. of Louisiana, was
udojded by a vote of "J IT to 10.
Resolved. Tire it Is the sense of this con
vention that dulling in futures, or future gani-
blinr. is injurious to Uie agricultural interests
of the United Btntes, and especially to the in
terest of the cotton growers of the south;
members in congress nre re<iucsted to pass the
IJateh Mil. or some kindred measure.
All the states voted solidly for the
resolution except Alabama and Missis
sippi, both voted a small fraction
against the resolution.
A score of plans were suggested in
writing by delegates and referred to
the committee on resolutions. One jiro-
vides for a bunknijit iaw ; another for
an iueretiHe of eirenlating medium, so
as to cheapen money, but all the others
ait was relate to increasing the value of cotton.

giving his name as Henry J. Leontivd,
but who, it is sujiposed, is Henry H.
Fpalding. who is wanted for Embe/,-
zling :i) from a iioston firm, was
arrested yesterday at Hotel lioyal by
the detectives. The arrest was made
on the strength of a telegram from
the superintendent of jioliee of lloston,
who gave a description and imparted
the information that the fugitive was
stojiping at the hotel Koval. The 'pris
oner denies that he is the man wanted
and a telegram has been sent to Iioston
for further information. Spalding was
the head bookkeeper for Wheeler,
Klodget & Co., and disappeared last
September leaving a descrepancy of
Sls.OtiO in his accounts. He was ar
raigned yesterday morning before Re
corder Atieoin. charged on the aflidavit
of detective Kerwin with being ;i fugi
tive from justice. Spalding was com
mitted to the Parish prison, without
bail until Jaunary I s .
