His son Stephen and his wife and

A Life Saving Home.
The following circumstance occurred
at the Cape of Good Hope: In one of the
violent storms that often occur there a
vessel was forced on the rocks and beaten
to pieces. The greater part of tho crew
perished miserably, as no heat could ven
ture to their' assistance. Meanwhile a
planter came from his farm to seo tha
wreck, and knowing the spirit of Ida
horse and his excellence as a swimmer
he determined to make a desperate effort
for their deliverance and pushed into
the thundering breakers. At first both
disappeared, but were soon seen ou the
surface. Nearing thewreck, he caused
two of the poor seamen to cling to hi«
bouts, and so brought them safe to tho
shore. Seven times did ho repeat this
perilous feat and saved 14 lives; but
alas! the eighth time, the horse being
much fatigued and meeting with a for
midable wave, the gallant fellow lost his
balance and was overwhelmed in a mo
ment. He was seen no more, hut the
noble horse reached the laud in safety.—

There is probably nothing from
which the public service of tho coun

its educated class that is, the small
amount of criticism which comes
from disinterested and comjietcnt
sources. It is a very rare thing for
an educated man to say anything
publicly about the questions of tho

art or literature, in the practice of
his profession or in the conduct of
his business, and if he has any inter

it is a languid one. He is silent be
cause he has not much care, or be
