FROM THE LiAoG'
Towing big rafts of timber in a tur
bulent sea is no easy task. So (.'apt.
Thompson, of tho tng Monarch, and
Pilot Wheeler told the other captains
•nd pilots along the water front the
Other day, says the San Francisco Ex
aminer.
The Monarch started from Astoria
October 12 to tow a raft of piles to this
port. The Monarch arrived recently
l^ut the raft is afloat in sections on the
Pacific ocean. It may bo that every
One of the ten thousand piles of which
the raft was originally composed is
scattered driftwood on the high seas,
pr perhaps a few hundred of those
great logs are still lashed, plunging
Sidelong or headlong at the enpriec of
©very billow, and at every plunge
threatening collision with passing com
merce. Some unfortunate ship may
encounter one or more of these roving
timbers and a few holes may Ik* stove
Into the sides of unsuspecting vessels.
The raft was valued at lifty thousand
dollars, but if lauded safely here would
have been worth four times as much.
Besides, there was eighteen thousand
dollars insurance on the raft, and its
Joss will represent a total loss to the
enterprising nu n who sought to have it
towed into San Francisco bay.
The trip of the Monarch was a rough
©ne from the start. Every precaution
had been taken. The logs were rafted
lu a cigar slui]>e, previous experiences
With tows of that kind having taught
Capt. Thompson many a lesson in
methods of lashing, but the south
eastern gale, which ha*, done so much
damage to tlie shipping In the north, j
was too much for the logging expedi-i
tion and when they got as far as the
Uccta lighthouse, about spto u. m. on
Tuesday, October Id, after having bat
tled with the elements four days and
wf/ur nights, they decided to abandon
what was left of their tow. It was not , , . , ,
much, for most of it hud abandoned it- i l !‘ l'' 1, ‘'** UM
self long before. The big raft com- I * U ' d Wk ‘*
me-need to lose piles and the heavy
chains which held them together had
long since been nothing but drag an
chors.
Tiie wind was so heavy that tho
Monarch could not pos ibly make u: y
headway, and the first night <>ut she
hud to lie in the trough of the sea.
Heavy seas and gales continued all the
time. There was no possibility to con
tinue tiie voyage with the dragging of
chains and logs as a handicap, and that
is why the two captains decided to
abandon their tow and east the logs
adrift on tiie billows of the turbulent
ocean, to bung against ships wherever
they meet them; to drive big holes into
their sides and, perhaps, to sink them.
Much indignation was expressed
among tiie men who go to sea and the
men who have shipping Interests.
They said that the attempt to to.v big
rafts during stormy times is criminal,
because every man acquainted with
tiie coast knows it cannot lie accom
plished. Many a time it. lias been tried,
but never lias anybody succeeded in
bringing a raft of large dimensions
into this port from the north except
when the winds were calm and the
ecus were undisturbed. It may be dene
at this season, said some of the old sea
dogs, if the open sea is avoided and the
trip is made by dodging along tho
coast and by traveling through bays
and gulfs only, but on the wide, open
Ocean, during stormy seasons,uo<>re-
f ron timbers will ever be made to float
nto the waters of Sun Francisco bay.

ANECDOTES OF THE QUEEN.
bhe Approved of a Troaiirlni; Ttiat Wins
AdiiiiulKtercd la Walm.
Apropos of the queen's recent sojourn
at Balmoral a north of Scotland news
paper bus been gleaning from among
the Deeside peasantry some new stories
about her majesty’s early visits to her
Highland residence. One of these re
lates to the boyhood of the prince of
Wales, says the Scottish American.
The prince on one occasion, when he
had temporarily escaped from the sur
veillance of the parental eye, played a
trick on a young country lad whom he
saw approaching witli a basket of eggs
on his arm, the result of the trick be
ing to break all or most of the eggs.
The lad was a tough Aberdonian and
could not brook this injury, so ho
turned to and doubling bis lists gave
Hu* prince a thrashing iu pile of tiie
lat ter's protest that be was the prince
of Wales.
“i’rinee an' a’ though ye be,” said the
boy, “ye’d nae business tae break my
eggs.” Just then the queen appeared,
Inning* seen part of the fray. She
quietly said: “You an* quite right, my
lad; lie had no right to break your
eggs ami he richly deserves w hat you
have given him.” Her majesty after
ward made inquiries about the boy
and sent him to school at her own ex
pense.
Another story relates to her majesty’s
visit to the cottagers in the neighbor
hood. On one occasion, when she had
been making calls among* the cottage
1 women, she dropped in, on her way
back to the castle, at the house of an
old woman who did not know her vis
itor. The old lady was both talkative
anil querulous; and, referring to a
fete at which the queen had been pre
sented that day, complained about peo
ple, including her own household,
“running like mad. to see a common
clay woman.’' Her grievance was that
she laid to wait till her folks returned
in order to get theii tea. for she was
too feeble to make it herself.
