The physician will not make visits
outside the city limits. This ticket
is not transferable and does not ap
ply to t be family of the employee,
and must be returned as soon as the
term of employment ceases. 'Ibis
privilege is a free gift, of the company
and is no part of the contract for
wages, and may lie made void by the
company, at its own option, without
notice.
This is a practical illustration of
Mr. Douglas’ idea, and will surely he
appreciated by the hundreds who re
ceive the cards.
He says that he believes there are
hundreds of workingmen and work-
ingwomeit who iind a doctor s hill a
great burden after a period of enforced
idl mess, and that if this is lilted
from them they must feel that their
employer is interested in them in
soi ie other way t han simply D* get all
the work he can for just as little
money as lie can. lie says also that
there are men and women who keep
▼fight at work when it would he het-
* ter for their health if they would lay
off' a day or two and have medical at
tendance. Then again they will now
feel free to consult the doctor when
they have slight Doubles, which
heretofore they would not do so be
cause of tbe cost.
The plan goes into effect to-day.
Dr. S. .1. (iruver has been engaged as
the physician and enters upon his
duties to-morrow.
The plan is a good one.
Speakingof tlte\Y. E. Douglas Shoe
Co., it may be said that their factory
is the* only one in the city where the
principle of arbitration is rceogni/.-d
und lias full sway. Mr. Douglas is a
tirm believer in the principle and lias
been since tlie establishment of the
State board of arbitration. He
claims t hat labor t roubles would not
be as frequent as they are if manu
facturers and help would recognize
this great principle, and adopt it.
The linn obliges every man who is |
hired to sign an agreement to submit ,
liny disagreement that may arise, and 1
which cannot be settled by the inter
ested parties, to tin* State board of
arbitration, t be decision of that board
to be final and to be binding on both
sides. Rending u settlement of any
disagreement the men agree to con
tinue at work. This agreement went j
in force Dee. 10. 1SSS. and lias worked
well. It is signed by the E. 1*. 1 . on
