Dr. W in. Curtis continued tin* school
after his father's sad death in iN.Vd.
Though the school was not so full
and the civil war soon came on, and
at the close found many of us in
volved in debt and Dr. W . M . Curtis
one of them. I have been told that
he lost .fT.tKHM lint he had in the bank
of the State in gold, lie told me at
the close of the war he owed ijila.tMiO,

I want to say privately. Mr. Edi

it should. It ought to have been re-

without a voice to call them into the

TRAGEDY AND COMEDY.
What a New Xoik i:e|Mti'lei' I omul Out on
His Strange Assinninent.
It was Sunday evening, about !t by the
clock, and the usual calm of that one
night in ttie week brood' d over The Press
office. A stranger entered. Hesitatingly
he thrust forth a little pack of grimy
cards written on with ink and rapidly
said: “< ientlemen, Hm a writer of jokes.
I've got some here I want to sell. I'm
desperately bard tip. It's a horrible”—
The little man stopi>ed short.
“Are you a professional jo—ah—hu
morist?" asked a reporter.
“Yes, sir,” said the stranger. “Atany
rate, I was a 111011th ago. Now I don't
know what I am.” He spoke the last
sentence with a half groan.
Then t • visitor continued: “Seven
years ago I was employed as a railway
clerk. I ad a little turn for writing
‘funny’ paragraphs. So 1 left railroad
ing. I've written jokes and paragraphs
and verses for nearly every paper there
is in town. Sometimes i made ssrii) a
week and sometimes double that amount.
Hut since the new year began 1 haven't
earned a $10 hill. 1 have a wife. Well,
we've been pretty nigh starvation, and
the landlady wanted to put us out for
not paying our rent only ye.-t rday. Oh.
Lord, this is what I've come t"! Yes,
yes; 1 saw that you gentlemen Junked at
my shirt. 1 know my degradation, ami
vou needn't be afraid of hurting Inx ti cl
ing-. Thde aren't enough b it to Ik*
hurt."
The reporter s'-nt him to the i t: lit city
editor. That gentlemen di\T I into his
poi k<T and produced a shilling half dol
lar. The entire staff contribut' d, and a
small amount of money was realized.
The reporter who had first talk'-d to the
stranger was a.-signed to go up to the lit
tle man's home and do wiiat was best
wit ii tlie money. As if dazed, tie* man
in tin- ilumicl shirt followed him.
A short walk brought them to his
home. Strewn over the sidewalk lay the
.-cant household goods of the tainily of
two. Tiie reporter interviewed the land
lady, while the little man sat down in
• one of ins own chairs outside witli a
blank lyok on ids lace.
• "That couple." tin* burly landlady \va>
meanwhile saying. “Why. they're the
most xvorihless lot around. They haven't
paid for a month, and tonight 1 just put
their tilings out in tin* street. The wife?
(ui, sin was tukt n sick or something, and
they carried her to tin* hospital in an
ambulance, ’
To the hospital the reporter rushed,
leaving the husband still sitting in a
chair on the walk. The house surgeon
came to t ho door. “This ease from ITi
J) — street?" he a-ked. “Dead; died 10
minutes ago. Cause malnutrition and
lack of rare, together with exposure. In
plain English,” cheerfully explained the
doctor, "that is starvation. Look at tin*
book it y<ni like. ’
Then the reporter broke the news to
tin' bereaved husband and returned to
the office. New York Press.

K<> Hindi has 1h*«*ii h»ar«l of Mary
Woll.-toneeraft as a herald of woman's
equality that most people liaxe forgotten
the name of Mary Astell, a contempo
rary of Defoe’s, who lived a hundred
years before Mary Woll-toueeraft, and
who was the lirst woman who pleaded
for “woman's equality of education and
social position.” If it were a daring
thing 1" do in the eighteenth century, it
was surely a much more d:uing tiling to
do in the seventeenth, and, though Mary
Astell maybe said to lum* "hedged" a
little under tin* wrath of her contem
poraries. yet to her is tin* credit of hav
ing hcen the first to urge the necessity
of giving woman tiie benefits of a thor
ough education. Other pioneers there
have been at a later date who have suf
fered slander and persecution in tin*
woman's cause, and whose work has

which t iie pioneers' sufferings purchased.
