Four Men. Sii|i|ios<'il to He Dead, are
Found Alive and I iiharmeii.
Scene* of I . Htaey,
SenAN'Tov. Da.. October 1.—From ap
parently certain death on Thursday,
when a portion of the workings of the
northwest colliery at Simpson, near
C’arbondale. caved in. NVilliain Mitchell,
George Arncy. John Fanning and An
drew Ivlapkowaky are today the objects
of demonstrative rej'/rin— vil
lage.
NN hen the eave-ii: oeeurre I theirdeath
was regarded as certain, hut i n Thurs
day night the rescuer* at work heard
responses to their tapping and it was
believed that there wa - one man to es
cape the fall. Yesterday when it be
came a certainty that all four were
alive tin* agony of Thursday was turned
into almost uncontrollable rejoicing.
They pushed their work more vigorous
ly then, and they pierced t he black wall
that had made the prison, almost tive
hour* earlier than expected.
I'he men were faint from lack of food
and drink, but lln-s.' in stimulating
quantities were supplied them, and
thc\ were shortly after midnight re
stored to their friends, hundreds of
whom stood massed at tile mine’s mouth
to receive ! hem. They were taken to
their homes iu wagons with demonstra
tions of joy greeting them along the
way.
Their escape from death is regarded
almost a miracle, considering the ex
tent of t he eave-in and the fact that
they were at work right beneath it.
They had heard the warning of the
cracking roof and tied to a place of
