It is a psychological law that the niiml is pleased with simple ratios. In their most abstract form these liariuonie ratios an- ! pure numliers, obtained from the ele ments 1, 2 and .'l, forming the harmonic numbers :> ;{ and 5. It is a fact that in •mind, color and form relations gov- ] erned by ratios constructed from the harmonic numliers or tlieir simple mul tiples are pleasing. This law or fact of mental constitution is the starting ]* tint of the inquiry after the principle com mon to sound, color and form and con stituting in all beauty. The application of these ratios in music haslss'ii known from the time of Pythagoras; also in color various harmonious combination* have wave lengths in harmonic ratio. In obtaining lieauty of form the liar- ■ mouic ratios are apples! to angular mag nitude, not to lengths or surfaces. The eye refers everything to a vertical line and a horizontal line, constituting a right angle. The right angle, 1, isharnionieal- ly divided into parts having the ratios to | itself that the notes of them-tare haveto j the fundamental note.
