MILITARY BRUTALITY.
Tlie l*iict llrijml unit nil Old Xian Tut I>nwn :

In Germany an l Austria, every week
brings with it instance ot military bru
tality toward civilians. Most of these
instances are forgotl* n utter the publica
tion of a few indignant paragraphs in
the Radical journalsand a Radical or So
cial Democratic interpellation in parlia
ment. One that occurred at Rivu, on
Lago di Garda, two weeks ago, however,
was so remarkable for sticli exceptional
brutality that it has had more serious
consequences.
Carl Hi igel, the German poet, was sit
ting with a friend at a table in the great
concert garden in Riva. His friend was
65 vears old and somewhat decrepit. At
the next table sat several otlicers of the
imperial chasseurs, who are garrisoned
at Riva. Heigel’s friend, who had been
weajied by a rather long walk, fell asleep,
and the oilicers began to poke iuu at
him. They were so loud that they woke
the old man up. When he heard them
cracking jokes at his expense, lie re
marked to Ileigel:
“Persons who make fun of an old man
can hardly be gentlemen, even if they do
wear uniforms.”
Ileigel nodded assent. All the* officers
heard the remark mid saw the nod. One
of them sprang up, faced Ileigel and
ordered him and the old man hi leave
the garden. Hcigel's answer was a stun
ning open hand blow* which sent the
officer reeling luck on the table.
Then followed a set no w ith features
painfully familiar to js*r.-on- who have •
lived in Germany or Anuria. The ofli

The process of milking a herd of rein
deer is singular, and we have often
watched it with interest, especially when
after it long tramp across the fields we
looked forward to a share of it ourselves.
Attended hy the sharp nosed Lapland
dogs, flu* herd appears, its meuthers
packed closely together and forming a
eonqiaet mass, in w hich the horns are
tv prominent feature. As they approach
nearer, one hears a grunting exactly like
swine, and a curious, crackling sound,
produced hy the contact of inmmirr.th]i*
horns and limbs. They are then driven
into uti imTirsme, each animal is lassoed
in its turn ovi r the horns and dragged
up to an erection in tin* middle, where
it is milked. The quantity afforded hy
each is only ala nit as nnieh as would
fill a claret glass, hut the milk is ex
tremely rich and nourishing.—Black
