CLEVELAND HAS THE BILL.

Washington, Aug. 16.—At 13:60 p.
m. th« tiiriff bill Ixsiring the signatures
of Sjwiikcr (Yisp and Vice President
St«Teiison was dcliver*‘d to Mr. Pearson
of Ohio, chairuian of the house commit-

to the White House and delivered it to
•he president.
Washington, Aug. 16.—The niiiotidod
tariff bill was laid Itefore th*- hons*> inr-

having been correctly enrolled and sign-
ad hy the speaker. It was at once sent
to the senate.
The speaker also submitted a letter
from Representative ('lifton R. Hnsrk-

memlier of congress from the Ssstiid
district of Arkansas.
The Democratic stcwtriiig committee of
the senate has agreed to refer all |x>pgiui
tariff bills to the tinauce commitfoo.
At 13:lh, the vice president aiinoumxsl
his signatnn* as affixed to the tariff bill.
In the senate, during the routine
morning business, the chief clerk of the
house delivered a message from the
house notifying the senate of the dis
charge of the house con feres on the
tariff bill, and of the fact that the house
had receded from its disagreement to
the senate amendments, and further,
that he (the clerkl had been directed to
present to the senate, for the signature
of its president, the enrolled tariff
hill.
Within a few minutes afterwards the
rice president announced that he had
signed the tariff bill.
Air. Harris asked that the house rev
enue bill be read tin* second time. To
the astonishment of everybody no sena
tor objected, and the house bills to
place coal, iron ore. barbed wire
and sugar on the free list
were read. Mr. Harris then took the
floor and sent to the clerk’s desk and had
read a letter from Secretary Carlisle,
just received. The letter reviewed the
condition of the treasury and estimated
the revenues of the government for the
next fiscal year. The figures showed
that under the tariff' bill just sent to the
president, revenues would exceed ex
penditures for the fiscal year ending

Its Suits Pittsburgers While the Pot-
tory People of New Jersey Say
the Schedule Will Ruin
Their Business.
Washington. Aug. Iff.—A prominent
Pittsburg ninimfaetnrer, who is in the
city, speaking of the settleiueni of tariff
legislat ion said:
Tin* passage of tin* senate bill was
hailed with joy in Pittsburg, especially
among the workingmen. This manu
facturing center severely felt tlie depres
sion caused by the long delay and un
certainty. ’and now that the matter is
settled, a boom in business is expected
to result.
For a year capitalists have held off in
vesting monev in imwenterprises. They
wanted tlie lariff settled before doing
anything. Some of the mills aud glass
houses have been idle since the agitation
began. Their owners .-aid they would
jtoi start until it Avas known for a cer
tainty what congress would do. Now
that they know, they say tlmy will
adapt themselves to the new condition
of affairs and start their plants. The
employes, of course, expect lower wages
than before, but as there is every indi
cation of a boom they are sure of steady
employment.
The highly protected niainifaeturers,
while not exactly pleased over the new
schedule, are glad to see the m ilter set
tled. Few of them say so. but their
manner and talk betray them. The
majority of them an- at the .-uniiuer re
sorts. but those who are still in tie city
are glad of the action taken by the
house.
