James Cox was found lying near the
foot of Illinois street at 10 o'clock Satur
day morning with a gas! in his sealp.
He said he had lieen .shot hy Max
Schmidt, a saloon kee|»er near hy. ('< x
was sent to the county hospital and
Schmidt arrested. At the county hospi
tal the attending physician said Cox had
not 1 let'll shot, and that the scalp wound
was of a trilling naitire. Cox was re
turned to tlie East Chicago avenue sta
tion and lockeel up. Schmidt was charged
with assault, gave bond and was re
leased.
Patrolman Becker went to Schmidt s
saloon ami secured possession of a pe
culiar revolver. It is circular in shape
ami resembles a jmeket tape measure
with a short barrel attachment. Inside
the device is it revolving cylinder xvith
seven chandlers of Small caliber. The
revolver is held in the small of the hand,
with the barrel protruding through the
lingers. The operator can discharge tin*
weapon by squeezing it, and the pro-
trmling barrel also serves the purpoM* of
brass knuckles. Cox said that Seliniidt
struck him with this weapon several
times ami then shot him in the head.
The caliber of the revolver is only 22,
the bullets being oblong in shape. The
weapon makes only a slight report, hut
is eapableof doing considerable damage.
It is the first of its kind the jioliee of the
East Chicago Avenue station have seen.

The gentlemen started, and Miss

the name of one of her distinguished
visit' irs.
“My little dog’s mmm is Teek—short
for Thcela, a (ieriuan character in one
of my plays. ’’
They all laughed heartily, and in
came the little fellow with the princely
name and .-traightway rushed at the

“She xvill bite me,” exclaimed the
duke.
“Basket, Teek! cried Mb's Ward re

prompt ots'dience, ran tint of her room
and curled herself up in the ha>ket. As
her visitors were der-eending the stairs
