K. II. DeOamp. of Tmk I.KPOKK.was
last week niltde tbe victim of the
• rsnging wrath of the street preacher
who was referred to in these columns
in our last issue. This preacher who
travels under the name of Robert
Hoyd w as in town a week or ten days.
When In* tirst came he was treated
kindly by everybody. Our resident
olergtneii afforded him every oppor
tunity to reach tbe people by an
nouncing bis appointments and doing
whatever else ministerial and gentle
manly courtesy seemed to dictate.
It was soon discovered, however,
that be was endeavoring to array one
class of society against the other.
It appeared to most of his intelligent
listeners that instead of preaching
t lie gospel he was preaching social
ism.
Matters readied a climax hist Sun
day night when he preached to the
factory hands.
In the midst of his harangue he
asserted that the town folks were un
willing to do any thing for t he fac
tory folks, that the town would give
not hing to huild his hearers a church.
He was so ahusive of the clergy men
and of the people in general at tiatf-
ney that Mr. iM'auip arose and
asked permission to interrupt him a
minute. He paused as if to grant
t he reijllest.
Mr. Get'am p t hen staled that the
people of Gatfney had signified their
willingness to assist in t he building of
a church for the factory people and
that they were willing to treat them
with courtesy at the churches al
ready established, and t hat it is w ron g
for anybody to talk -mdi things a> la
wns talking.
The next day. Monday. Mr. Hc-
t'amp was arraigned la-fore Mayor
Littlejohn to answer the charge of
Histurbing Hivinc Worship.'
Mr. I’ridmore. of Holmes and I’rid-
more was the only wit ness iut rod need
hy the defense.
The witness with one exception,
were very conservative and their
statement s made out t he ease for tie-
defense.
The jury consisted of Harris.
James t'ook. \\ . V\ . W ilkins. .1. H.
Jones, W. O. Lipseomh and Hr. Hn-
I’re.
\fter patiently listenin-g to the
%
testimony the jury peiired. In
aiiout live minutes they returned a
verdict of not guilty.
After t he t rial of Mr. IM'amp he
took the afternoon train for Spartan
burg.
Let us be charitable enough to hope
that bis intentions are fur good, hut
We believe some of his assertions are
too general.
