Mrs. Mary l>»*nn. « former resident of this plan e, but recently of Rid«;e Sprinjj, died ait lu‘r home last Satur day. Thomas Davis was arrested late yesterday afternoon for trading stock under inortjjaipe. At last accounts he was hunting hail. "Jteverened Ihador Hill Dawkins was up before Maiyor l.ittlejobn Wed nesday for running ^ “tiocr" and was fined ♦ 10 or twenty daivs. He took tiie twenty days in default of the !|«IO aind is now working on the streets. We understand the new smelting and acid works at IHaekslmr>; have lately been tested and found sntisfae- tory. This whole mineral belt is in ti-rested in tlie outcome of this enter prise. Its importance can not be over estimated. Mr. John Spears, one of the oldest and most respected citizen of I nion county, died yesterday at bis hpme near Skull Shoals. Mr. Spears was well known in this city, and Ids sor rowing family have the sympathy of the comn unity. Henson (ioudelock. a colored helper at the saw mill of D. U. Lavender, bad his foot cut by one of the saws last week. He came near losing a toe or two. The injury, while pain ful. is not serious. Henson’s only rej»ret was that be would lose some time from bis work. The cold weather that lias threat ened the orowino crops and caused much uneasiness is gradually passing away. Outside of the discomfort of such chilly weather and the loss of about ten days’ growth to vegetation, the loss is comparatively insignificant. As we writi , this seems to be a ease of “more seared Ilian hurt.” There was a pounding—pound party—in the northern portion of the city last nioht. Several youn^ men who don’t live in that section at tended. Tmk I.KiHiKK lias it pretty straight that if they continue visiting in that section there is to be a “pounding’’ rioht son e of these times and some one will be made to “toat the mail.” As stated last week, Edwin Walters returned from the west last Friday. He was accompanied by Mr. I’etei Mctiee. bead of the linn of Mcftt^\ Kahmaun A' Co., contractors of Kai • sas City, Mo. Mr. Mctiee returned to Kansas City yesterday. He was very favorably Impressed with tin Ineral resources of this part of the Imntry. and he will probably make- (ivestments and im|H>rtant develoj . Incuts in the near future. Mr. Wuh ^fers will remain here for the present and represent the linn. The city was pretty well represent ed at Charlotte for the 201b of Max celebration. The contingent, how ever, was very silent w hen ( harlotte had the best of the baseball ipiestion. The lirst •'aino was a j^mmI jme, fill of interest, and several pretty play were made by both teams. O. fiatfhey.* j)e II, but for some unac- [reason the news has ju>t I re, The many friends of h.y.Uhj:; will deeply sym- Lth him in hia Joss. The Recital was a Pronounced Social and Artistic Success. The recital at Limestone Tuesday evening was a social and artistic suc cess. (Juite a crowd went down, and they were well repaid for t heir attend ance. The programme was carried out without deviation. The perform ers were at their best, and it would be difficult to select the most efficient. Miss Johnson's violin playing was especially line. Her touch is delicate, and she received a very liberal amount of applause. She favored the audi ence with “Weber’s List Vallz” in response to an encore. Mrs. (lurganus' singing was highly praised. Her rendering of Dudley (luck's “In Thy Dreams” was per haps better received than any of her selections. She lias wonderful con trol of her voice, and displayed it to advantage. Miss Hackney was well received. Her elocution is fautlcss. Her comic selection was most happily rendered, and liberaliv appiamii I. These charming ladies, however, reserved the best for the last, for cer tainly even Xym < Yiakle could have no fault to find with their rendering of Somersville's “.Music on the Uap- pahanoek.” Though this was the last on the prograninn the audience was loath to accept it as >!icli.
