THE GAFFNEY MANUF’G. CO. ONE OF THE FINEST MILLS IN COUNTRY. An Interesting History of Its Organiza tion and Construction—The Men Who Manage and Direct Its Affairs. Tht* inanufiicttire of cotton j'oods in the South has attained such prom inence that our Northern mills mak ing the same numbers of yarn feel very forcibly the competition from that section. The Southern mills, with a few exceptions, are more mod ern built than those in tin* North, as a large majority of them have been constructed within the last ten or twelve years, and are tilled with the Iwst machinery that could be secured at the time they were put in opera tion. Most of these mills have been successful even from the very start, having succeeded in turning out a nice quality of goods at a cost, when sold, that left, a handsome margin for the mills. Thu illustration which we present our readers this week shows a Southern mill that from the first has met with remarkable success. which fronts on the railroad. The main mill is 201 feet long by 0a wide, two stories high, with engine room, cloth room and boiler house, 120x40, two stories, except boiler house, which is only one. The buildings are of brick made by the cotnpanv on its own land within feet of mill site. Besides the buildings mentioned the company owns a two-story brick of ficebuilding, size :if»x22 1 also standard warehouse and waste house, thirty tenements, eight of which arc brick; the others are neat frame cottages. This company has the best cottages in the South for its operatives. The factory buildings are all equip ped with automatic sprinklers, elec- tic lights, etc. The mill is claimed by the mutual insurance companies to be one of the best fire risks in the country. Besides the sprinkler equipment, hydrant houses arc blea ted a* convenient points around the mill. A large underwriters’ fire pump of one thousand gallons per minute capacity is located near the holler house, and is at all times, night and Sundays, ready for duty, fifty pounds of steam being kept up for this pur pose. This pump has as its supply a brick and cement reservoir of 17a,- 000 gallons capacity. Besides this reservoir a lo.tHXt gallon iron tank in pers from the A. T. Atherton Machine steam plant, sprinklers and electric light plant were furnished by the l>. A. Tompkins Co. The mill contains 10.432 spinning spindles and 300 looms, and iscquip- ped with the Aerophor system of air moistening, furnished by the I'uitcd States Air moistening and Ventilat ing Co., of Providence, If. I, which is working to the highest satisfaction of the owners. The numbers of yarns are 2S warp and llti to fits filling. The cloth made is the same count and number as print cloth, namely, fitx (It, but instead of being printed it is finished for the bleaching trade. The mill started operations in May, IS'.Kt, and has run both day and night since. The product of the mill has been sold up and today part (fits product is sold ul^mpl to November I next. The goods sell at a premium over New England made goods, com mission men claiming that the goods are better made and from better stock than most of the New England mills use. The product is sold through the commission house of Carey, Bayne Smith. Baltimore and New York. This mill has been built cheaper than any other first-class mill in the South, t he cost |)cr spindle being only $15.24, which includes re al estate, bn." ■ . .. ., ■ ■ > . ,» » . and is known as one of the best man aged mills in the South, the (JatTncy Manufacturing Co..
