was in flames. They barely had time
to excape with their lives, and lost
nearly, ij not quite all, their posses

lost.
The house adjoining, which was the
property of Mr. Lytton, and occupied
by Mr. Adolphus Gaffney, caught tire
and burned rapidly. Mr. Gaffney
succeeded in saving nearly all his
household effects. Neighbors kindly

An Apology.
Perhaps it does not sound exactly
right or tend to our credit to begin to
make excuses at once, but the truth
of the matter is we are not satisfied

the newspaper press, and we have not

Mr. Jeffries’ Death.
On Saturday morning the sad news
reached us of the death of Col. John
R. Jeffries. He was taken sick away
rom home, and died at Jonesville.
Many had not even heard that he was
sick. He died of blood poison, the
result of a scratch from a barbed wire

Col. Jeffries was In the pri-nc of

He rests from his labors.
Although a resident of Union
county he was frequently in our town
where business often called him, and
where all know him.
Improvements.
Mr. T. Davenport is erecting a two
story brick building on Limestone
street, which is to serve as a residence
and store sombined. The brickwork
is already completed and the earpen-

as fast as the weather will permit.
This will add greatly to the appear

close up an ugly gap.
The Methodist parsonage on Mont
