NEW CHUCHES.
Mr. J. T. Harris:
Dear Sir:—I have iouml the use of the wa

■o efficacious in the case of a young lad.' pa
tient of mine, who hassuffered for years witli
Diabetes, with all its different attendants,
that I want to add nay testimonial to
the many you already have. The patient
I refer to has used the water freely at
home for scarcely a month now. witli
more beneficial results than from months
spent at different noted lithia springs in
different parts of the Tnited States, besides
long continued use of the same waters at
home. Other of my patients and friends are
now using the same with best results, f cor
dially recommend it to all suffering from
similar diseases.
Very respectfully yours.

Asheville, N. C.. April, 24. 1893.—An ex

gard it as one of the l»ost. if not the best,
Lithia Water known to the profession. In
the condition of Phosphatlc Urine, its action
is marvelous. Its use in the Khcumatic and
Gouty diseases afford me more comfort than
either t he Buffalo or Londonderry Waters.
Very truly yours.

GAFFNEY, S. C., Jan. 28, 1897:
W. S. Winfreo of Spartanburg,
joined Thk Lkdger list last week.
There was a larger crowd of plant
ers in the city yesterday than for any
day for a week past.
Wo regret to learn that James L,
Scruggs, Esq., of the battle-ground
section is confined to his home.
The warm weather of yesterday
served to bring a good many of the
“frez-up” people out of the house.
Boh Harris has moved from Chero
kee to GafTney and accepted a posi
tion with Capt. W. H. Richardson.
Business for the past week has
been the slackest known in some
time, all on account of th« extreme
had weather.
Henry, the motive power of Thk
Lkdgkk says, “The past cold spell
was monsterous hard on colud people
out’n wood.”
Keep your eye on The Ledger.
We propose to give every subscriber
the worth of his dollar. Now watch
and see if we do not keep oi r word.
The extreme bad weather of the
past few days has made local news
so scarce it is almost Impossible
to rake up an item with a fine tooth
comb.
W. H. Nobbin, of Dexter, contem
plates moving to Gaffney. In fact
we are told he is now winding up his
business at that place with a Vi ew
locating here.
Should anyone who is not a sub
scriber of this paper read it we would
bo please to have their names. We
might induce.them to spend 25c, 50c
or $1.00 with us.
Notwithstanding the extreme cold
weather of the past week lire wood
has not been in such great demand.
We saw a man the other day who
had hard work to dispose of a good
loud of good wood.
Miss Elliot Snead has a stone
churn which her groat grandmother
brought from Wales filled with but
ter when she immigrated to this
county. Tno churn is about one
hundred and twenty five years old.
Several parties have been fined by
Mayor pro tern Jones in the past few
days for not appearing as witness in
a liquor case when summoned by the
police. Boys you had better appear
or quit patronizing the blind tigers.
Town Clerk Baker and W. II. Ross
were kept busy last Friday and Sat
urday listing lax returns but a large
number failed to return and as a
consequence of not heeding the
warning will have to pay the penally.
One of the amusing incidents in
town last week was a rabbit chase.
Arthur Fridmore furnished the rabbit
and Officer Lipscomb was the starter.
The rabbit made a good run and fur
nished amusement for a large crowd
of chasers and spectators.
The Ledger wants an advertise
ment from every business man in
GafTney. It should have them. A
business that - Is worth running at all
is worth advertising and ns an ad
vertising medium there is no better
in iliis section than The Ledger.
We can improve your husineess.
An inviting and interesting spot is
the beautiful pine grove in front of J.
I). Goudelock’s residence. The smart
little house keepers have mad« it par
ticularly bright with their busy little
hands and although the playhouses
have no occupants these cold wintry
days one cannot pass by without
being reminded of the happy child
hood hours of the long ago.
Besides the one in the Course of Con-
Etructisn There will be others.
The Presbyterians have set the
pace in building new chuches and be
fore long that congregation will be
worshiping in one of the handsomest
little churches in upper South Caro-
lina. The building is now ready.for
the roof and if Jim and his boys can
have a few days of good weather it
will not bo long before it will be un
der cover. The interior, as well
as the exterior, will be a model of its
kind. The seats, lighting and fur
nishing are to be of the most modern
design. The building committee are
to bo congratulated on their work
and the church is to he congratulated
on its fortunate selection of so able
a building committee.
The Baptist have already began to
raise funds for anew church building
and The Ledger is reliable informed
that when that congregation builds
it will build one of the handsomest
churches in the South.
The Methodist are also contem
plating a new building. In fact we
are told that the site has already
been selected and that the day is not
for distant when definite plans will
be made to begin work.
When all the churches are finished
GafTney can boast of having ns fine
lot of church buildings as any town its
size in the South. Its is only in
keeping with our progress, [however,
that we should erect pretty and con
venient structures for the purpose
of worshiping Him who said: ‘‘Let
there be light.’
