TRADE.—Will there be any? Yes, we think so. Why?
Because first our country is in ^ood condition. Second, our peo
ple need tf'^ods, both staple and holiday. We at last have pre
pared for a big trade and propose to get it. On what do we
base our faith? Fair crops and the good sense of the Cherokee
County people. A Presidential year has always been considered
a hoodoo on business. That is true, hut by whom? For the
most part the confirmed croaker or ne’er-do-well, the politician
who predicts calamity as the result of the other side winning, and
the idler who never made a success of anything in his life. Has
it not been so in every campaign that you remember? What a
grand excuse for a lazy man to relinquish the little energy he has
and wait for the thing to lx* settled. All of our elections are over,
the brains and muscle of this new county whether they be in
counting room, held or factory are not worrying over the result
now, as we have the new county. The side that is right in the
past election will prevail and those who differed honestly will
join in sustaining the verdict. We extend to both a cordial wel
come to come in and sample our hospitality and inspect our
goods. Call for what you want if you don’t sec it, as our store is
so full we can’t show everything. Our Christmas goods are now
in. The handsomest lot of cut-glass and hand decorated bottles
filled with the best extiacts of perfumes ever offered on tills
market, also an unsurpassed lot of plush and celluloid Xmas
goods. Come in and see them. Wc have something to suit all.
'We have no trash this year, but something that will last and he
of some service. We arc running against the dispensary now,
that is we are dispensing Hot Soda. You will find Beef,‘dam,
Coffee or.Chocolate stimulating, on a cold day. It makes you
think the thermometer has certainly risen 10 degrees, but next
day it don’t make you feel like it has gone down 100. Try it!
Our other lines are full. Does your head or tooth ache? We
cure it free of charge.
The weather this Christmas has
been cool and clear.
Levi Garrett, one of the oldest and
best liked colored men in this place,
died last Monday night.
All members of the first Baptist
church are requested to attend the
servicefe*Sunday morning.
Rev. C. E. Robertson will hold ser
vices in the Methodist church Sun
day afternoon at 4:30 o’clock. * The
public are cordially invited.
From a private note we learn that
J. T. Tridmore, a Gaffney boy, is
again living in Alvin, Texas, after
spending some time in Dallas.
Our schools are looking forward to
1S{>7 as a lively year with them.
They arfe full now and new girls and
boys will be in them all next week.
The drug stores did a rushing bus
iness for several days after Christ
mas. Bromo Seltzer and coco-cola
with phosphate seemed to be in de
mand.
Moses Wood will move into his
new house in a short time and we
learn that his present residence will
be occupied by a gentleman from
York county.
Mrs. Myra Gaffney killed two pigs
on the 17th inst.. weighing 703 lbs.,
and made 18 gallons of lard which
weighs 160 lbs. These pigs were
killed in Cherokee county.
After two days of rest everybody
resumed business on Monday morn
ing. The before-Christmas activity,
is now apparent in all the stores,
and saws, hammers and trowel are
heard in every quarter of the enpitol
of Cherokee county.
Among the many handsome and
useful Christinas presents received
this year by Rev. C. E. Robertson
none arc more appreciated than a
handsome gold watch presented by
his Spartanburg church. It is a
beauty, indeed.
“Billy” Caldwell, of Concord. N. C.
has the contract to wire the city hall.
He came down Monday to go to work.
Our people may rest assured that.
•‘Billy” Caldwell will do a good job,
for ho conbines with his sunny nature
t hat element which makes men—hon
esty—and he will do what is right.
K. L. Hunnicutt, of Clifton, was in
the city yesterday. Mr. Hunnicutt
wishes to move to Gaffney but is un
able to find u house to live in. Peo
ple who have means should build
more bouses to rent as Thk Leduer
knows from experience that it is im
possible to rent a three, four or five
room cottage in the place.
A Shooting Scrape.
Last Thursday afternoon a crowd
of colored sports were in a grove be
yond Col. Sam Jefferies’ fish pond in
dulging in a quiet little game of “five-
up.” In the gathering were “Bud”
Lockhart and Henry Landrum, two
of the best known members of the
colored sporting fraternity in this
community. During the game it
seems as if “Bud’s” luck was “agin”
him, and as a natural consequence he
found himself without the “squitty”
when it came time to “pony-up” at a
certain stage of the game. Turning
to Henry, he said : “Henry, loan mo
a nickel.” Henry replied that he did
not have one. Then “Bud” said:
“Well, I’ll git a nickel.” Suiting the
action to the word he pulled his
thirty-two, thirty-four, or whatever
it was and plugged Henry, who by
this time was endeavoring to put
space between himself and “Bud,’
in the back. Now the “Bully of do
town am languishing in do Hotel de
Dean,” and will end up on the chain-
gang for “havin’ his fun.”
“W. L.”
W T e trust that "W. L.” of Blacks
burg, who furnished The Ledger
with such an interesting account of
the “rise and fall” of the iron in
dustry in this section, will let us
hear from him again on the same
line, or such other reminiscences of
this section in the long ago as he may
select. Come again old friend.

Most of 4he girls of Cooper-Lime
stone institute went home to spend
Christmas.. So did the boys of the
M. and F. Institute. All
turn in a few days, and we
leam qtiite a number of new pupils
will return with them. Come on.
Our schools are of the best. Gaffney
and Cherokee county are proud of
them.

In all the immense throng that
was in Gaffney the days just preced
ing Christmas day, peace and good
cheer prevailed. Sidewalks and
streets were literally jamed with
people and vehicles and the most
entliusiastic among this host, never
got beyond saying “hurrah for Chero
kee county,” and those who did not
respond in like manner felt the same
sentiment roll up in their hearts.
The Southern States should all
unite and publish a series of his
tories of the late war, to be taught
in our schools. This is a pressing
necessity. Let each state appoint
some competent man to assist in
writing those histories. The books
now in use are slanders upon the
Confederacy and our Southern sol
diers. It is too big an undertaking
for one state, but by the entire South
uniting in the work it would cost but
a small sum, In comparison with the
good and justice to be done.
The first quarterly conference for
