her residence in the northern part of
the city, also jher farm near by it,
will soon move to the Schirmer cot

W. Sam Lipscomb is one of the
fair-minded men who opposed the
new county but has acquiesced to
the will of the majority. Would
that the opposition had on its side
more like him.
Rev. W. T. Thompson has just
finished painting his dwelling on Vic
toria Avenue. The colors have been
selected with good taste and the work-
well done, which makes it an orna
ment to the Avenue.
W. T. Thompson sold the first bale
of cotton in Cherokee county. It
was bought by R. S. Lipscomb for
the Gaffneny Manufacturing Com
pany was classed as good middling
and brought 7jf cents.
They tell it on Uncle Pompy Ned
Lipscomb that he became so excited
that ho voted his registration cir-
tificate instead of a No ticket. We
can’t say that he did do it but that’s
what tho hoys are telling on him.
It is against the city ordinance to
shoot lirecrackers in tho city limits,
so the little boys had better not
shoot them, for if they do the police
will have to put them up. We don’t
want to see any of our hoys in the
guardhouse.
Moses Wood’s new residence on
Rutledge street is now in tho hands
of the painters and will soon he ready
to move into. It is on a beautiful
site and when finished will be one of
t he handsomest buildings in the capi
ta! of Cherokee county.
.1. G. Galloway & Son have the
contract to cover tho Florence mill
at Forest City, N. C. They sent a
force of men and a car load of tin plate
to that point last week. The com
pany may rest assured that Jim and
his boys will do a first class job.
Work is progressing rapidly on the
new Presbyterian Church. The
brick work on it is by far the best
that has yet been done in the capital
of Cherokee county, and when
finished, will be one of the hand
somest buildings in the Piedmont
section of tho State.
There will he a Literary and Musical
entertainment given by the pupils of
tho Gaffney Male and Female Semi
nary on Tuesday night Dec. 22 at their
hall, under the directions of Prof. W.
L. Johnson. There will be no admis
sion fee. The public is invited. Miss
llird Crawley and the Amutuer Or
chestra will assist.
Dr. Seltlemcycr is confined to his
bed with an attack of fever. The
doctor wanted to vote for the new
county so bad that he sent a request
to the managers to take the box to
his homo in order to allow him to
vote, hut they couM not do that, so
he did not get to vote. His many
friends will take the will for the deed,
however, and give due credit for his
I patriotism.
Last Tuesday night a week ago
while our citizens were celebrating
the new county election some dirty
scoundrel took occation to maltreat
a horse belonging to David Hawkins,
which hud been left tied in one of
the hack tots. We hope the animal
may recover as it would be a great
loss to Dnvo if it should die. Its a
mighy mean man who would try to
avenge himself on a poor innocent
dumb brute and if tho guilty party
could ho discovered he should be
dealt with to the full extent of the
law.
•
We went to see the talking machine
at Masonic Hall Manday night. There
was u fair sized audience present. In
fact the “standing room only” sign
should have been put up, us all the
seats were taken and a number stood
up. It was just like a hundred other
phonographs we have seen, a wonder
ful machine, it is true, but getting
very common. It is a pity, however,
that people who pay to see and hear
entertainment of this kind cannot bo
permitted to get the wortli of their
money without being annoyed during
the entire exhibition by the disgrace
ful conduct of a few “Smart Alecks”
who keep up an incessant chatter.
Electric Power.
Anderson’s enterprise and sturdy
self-reliance are forcibly illustrated
by the fact that a homo company is
now at work putting up an extensive
electric plant on Seneca River, ten
miles from the city to supply power
to manufacturing industries here in
town, and a contract was made at
tho outset to furnish the Anderson
Cotton Mills 1,200 horse power at $15
per horse power per year. The force
of this illustration can bo seen when
contrasted with the fact that the
Buffalo Railway Company, of Buffalo,
N. V., has recently contracted with
the Niagara Falls Tower Company
for 1,000-horse power, for which it is
to pay $.‘1(5 per horse power per year
In other words, an Anderson,
manufacturing company can get its
electric power from an Anderson
power company at $15 per horse
power, whereas a Buffalo enterprise
finds it to its interest to pay $W) for
like power to an outside corporation.
The whole South would do well to
watch Anderson and follow her
example—Anderson Journal.
Gaffney is within half the distance
of as fine water power on broad River
as there is In the state. If it will pay
Anderson to invest in the above
enterprise it will he well for our
capitalists to begin to look to our
nearby water fall for the power that
is already needed by this city and
Blacksburg. As well us that which
new enterprises in both cities will
soon require.

Election Aftermath.
In last week’s Ledger we said:
“Joe Allen’s went against us by
20 to 2. Again we lift our hat to the
two patriots.”
We can’t exactly explain why wo
said “Joe Allens” when we should
have said “Jim Allens” and we
don't know how in the world we
come to say it went against us by
20 to 2, when it went in our favor by
those figures. Wo don’t drink—not
even hard cider—but we must confess
wc were intoxicated at the result, so
we apologize to those two who voted
against us for calling them patriots
and putting them in tho wrong light
and to the twenty six who voted for
it we can only say :
“Forgive us boys, we were not re
sponsible because of our jubilation.”

TRADE.—Will there be any? Yes, we think so. ^hy?
Because first our country is in good condition. Second, ou^’peo-
ple need goods, both staple and holiday. We at last have/pre-
pared for a big trade and propose to get it. On what (lo we
base our faith? Fair crops and the good sense of the Cherokee
County people. A Presidential year lias always been considered
a hoodoo on business. That is true, but by whom? For the
most part the confirmed croaker or ne’er-do-well, the politician
who predicts calamity as the result of the other side winning, and
the idler who never made a success of anything in his life. Has
it not been so in every campaign that you remember? What a
grand excuse for a lazy man to relinquish the little energy ho has
and wait for the thing to be settled. All of our elections are ‘ovei^
the brains and muscle of this new county whether they beift
counting room, field or factory arc not worrying over the result
now, as we have the new county. The side that is right in the
past election will prevail and those who differed honestly will
join in sustaining the verdict. We extend to both a cordial wel
come to come in and sample our hospitality and inspect our
goods. Call for what you want if you don’t see it, as our store is
so full we can’t show everything. Our Christmas goods are now
in. The handsomest lot of cut-glass and hand decorated bottles
filled with the best extracts of perfumes ever offered on this
market, also an unsurpassed lot of plush and celluloid Xmas
goods. Come in and see them. Wo have something to suit all.
We have no trash this year, but something that will last and be
of some service. We are running against the dispensary now,
that is we are dispensing Hot Soda. You will find Beef, Clara,
Coffee or Chocolate stimulating on a cold day. It makes you
think the thermometer has certainly risen 10 degrees, but next
day it don’t make you feel like it has gone down 100. Try it!
Our other lines are full. Does your head or tooth ache? We
cure it free of charge.
