WANTED—WATER.
This is the season when water is
lowest in the earth. Many wells are
now dry that before furnished a
plentiful supply. Are we to sink
our wells deeper and depend solely
upon them for our water supply or
need we wait longer on our water
works?
We can see but one advantage in
waiting and that is to profit by the
experience of Xowberry, Laurens and
Union in their effort to secure nrte-
sion water. In the mean time we are
at the mercy the devouring llame.
The winter season is upon us when
risks are greatest. What have wo
done, and what are we doing towards
preparing for such an emergency as
might arrive at any time? We arc
utterly helpless. In case of fire
breaking out on any of our crowded
thoroughfares, if the first clTort fail
to subdue it we can but hold our
hands and look on in dismay. Xo
semblance of an organization; no
leader; no fire engine; no ladder; no
bucket brigade; almost no water. Is
it any wonder that insurance, in
some instances, about equals the*
legal rate of interest.
We ought to have a hook and lad
der company, drilled and disciplined
under competent instructors. Even
if our commissioners are preparing a
surprise for us, and wo are soon to
have a bountiful supply of pure
water, the hook and ladder organiza
tion should be kept intact.
Will not out City Council look
after this matter before a big (ire re
minds us of our folly. “In time ol
peace prepare for war.”
needed as well for protection as for
for his services. Have such protec
tion, and there would be almost an
immediate response in graceful shrub
bery, symmatical evergreens, beau
tiful roses and gravelled walks.
More costly monuments would he
reared, and our steps would turn
oftencr and more willingly to the city
of our dead.
Our area is not large enough, liy
all means, while it is in our power to
do so, let us enlarge ihe boundary on
the west, until it reaches the road
leading to old Limestone.
SENATOR TILLMAN.
Every one will acknowledge that
Senator Tillman does his own think
ing; and further, ho is not afraid to
speak what he thinks.
He feels that we need smaller coun
ties in our state that, it will be to the
interest of the dismembered counties
as well as to the now counties that
may be carved out of the old To
this end he worked when a member
of the Constitutional Convention,
but he could not get all he wanted.
As Senator of South Carolina, and
working as he feels for her hest^ in
terests, he hesitates not to give ex
pressions to his opinions even in the
territory where interest is now at
fever heat.
Xot only will we welcome Senator
Tillman to Gaffney, but we hope that
all who are within the bounds of the
proposed new county will come out
to hear him.
OUR GOD.
Thou art the great First Cause,
the mighty Architect of creation.
Thy works so grand and beautiful
praise thee, aye “earth and heaven
with ten thousand tongues (ill thy
courts with sounding praise.”
Man made in thy own image adore
our Father, thou crowdest our lives
with goodness and mercy, thou
crownest our years with living kind
ness. Thou alone hast blest the hus
bandman and made tiic fields wave
in rich harvest—our barns to burst
with plenty. Thy hand has stayed
war and pestilence. Thou hast smiled
Upon our homes and been the ‘‘Angel
in the cloud” dispensing joys and
griefs, consecrating smiles and tears.
On this Thanksgiving day we exalt
hit'll Heaven our God glorious in
holiness, fearful in praises, doing
bonders!”
Wo magnify our God because thou
«rt, and hast inhabited eternity—the
great “I Am.” Oh holy attributes,
ihe perfection of Deity overwhelm us !
We tune our harps this day and lift
hearts and voice in adoration that
far back in the ages “God so loved
the world” that heaven was robbed
of its richest jewel—for man !
Dear triune God and Savior! ‘‘for
thy gifts the world were poor in
thunks.” ‘All things shall pass
away, except the love of God, which
shall live and last for aye.’ With
mindful hearts let us look and see on
what a treasury our wants may call”
—“I uni thine all in all.”
THE CITY OF THE DEAD.
W ) sli u.ihl deli (‘it to linger where
our dead are buried. To further this
end our Cemetery ought to he ma le
' as attractive as possible. The first
steps have been taken in this direc
tion. The larger portion of the re
serve bus been regularly laid out in
walk* and drives, giving to each lot
n front in a drive way and running
liaek to a walk, liut this is not
enough. A sexton or gardener is
MINISTER BAYARD.
President Cleveland could not have
found a worthier man to represent us
at the Court of >St. James than the
polished Bayard. From first to last
lie has adhered strictly to his mission,
and has magnified his country in the
eyes of Englishmen. At public-rc-
eeptions his is a noted figure and his
utterances on such occasions always
attract attention. I’erhnps no man
during the past four years, has done
as much as he to bring the two great
English speaking nations into such
friendly relations. When he returns
to private life it will be with the
hearty endorsement of the best of
England and of the party in the
United States that soon is to retire
also for a season.
Such Tactics Will Not Win.
(Correspondence of The Ledger.)
Suxnvside, S. C., Nov. 1(5, 18% —
Mr. Editor:—Will you please let
me say through your columns that
as one seeking information from the j
mostTeliahale authoritylultended the
de-bate at the Etta June school house
on the night of the 14th, when the :
subject of establishing a new couul.y
was to be discussed by Its friends i
and opponents? A large crowd had
assembled there for the same purpose
that I had done—seeking information. 1
On arriving on the grounds I found
everything in readiness for a big de‘ |
bate. The opposition had brought :
Mr. J. F. (Boss) Fowler and Rev. J. |
G. Farr and Henry Thompson to help
oppose the movement while Messrs,
DeCamp and Butler, of GalTney were
there to advocate it. Some time was
lost in getting judges, as the new !
county men refused to’sit, having :
made up their minds to vote for it.
Findly Mr. J. Fair, of 1’earidge, and
Wm. Smith and Win. Howell, of
York county agreed to sit as judges
and the debate was opened by J, L.
Strain in favor of the new county, i
followed by Jason M. Greer against j
it. For about four hours the debate \
went on—part of the time the speak
ers seemed to forget the subject and
were arraying tho country people
against the town with all the biit-.r-
ness they could commend. One 1
speaker even went so far as to say
that “the people of Gutfney have gone
to Spartanburg on a certain occasion
to howl Bon Tillman down, and 1
am told that man is not a Tillmnnitc
either.
The only arguments made against
the new county was made hy .las. S.
Walker. The* other speakers shot
over or under the mark invaribly.
Messrs. Butler and DeCamp both ,
usedjofficial duta|from theCompt roller
General’s office to support their argu
ments and both men made line
speeches. They evidently had the I
crowd with them, overwhelmingly.
I was so utterly disgusted with the
logic and tirade of abuse advanced by
the opponents of the new county in
trying to array the county against
the town that I resolved to vote for
the new county anyway.
If the movement is to be defeated
hyjsuch tactics all hope of making our
country happy and prospering is at
an end.
From the very start s» mo of ti e 1
friends of the new county seemed to
think that the judges were in sym
pathy with (heir opponents. And
they preferred to have the decision
1 f tho question to a majority of the
• oters present. To this the opposi
tion objected. The judges decided
in favor of the negative while votes |
were mudeon tho other side for the !
new county by tbe arguments made
n favor of It. Thus both sides were 1
gratlied at the result,
Siectator. 1

Will Exercise His Right.
Skull Shoals, 8. C., Nov. 2:i.—
Well, the new county is tho hot issue
now, and I just want to tell the peo
ple what the chief opponent of the
new county is preaching. I did not
want to personate any man, but, J.
M. Greer says a man wno only pays
poll tax has no right to vote in thi.--
new county election; well, on the
start 1 shall say, if I am not mis
informed, that would leave Mr.
Greer out of the voting, 4ind I want
to any to every voter in this new
county not to pay any attention to
such slut! as that. I am a poor man,
as poor as men get to be, but I am
qualified by the constitution of this
state. Neither Mr. Greer nor any
other man can cut mo out of my vote.
I have a right to vote for a new
county if 1 choose to, as w T ell as Mr.
Greer has to oppose it.
I have no axe to grind; I want no
office, though if I did 1 would only
be, like many others, perhaps, incom
petent to (ill Jit. We live in a free
country, and, thank God for it, we
are a free people. Aye! the guns
that roared around over these old
bills over one hundred years ago
proclaim oyr freedom and our right
to vote on such measures as suit our
minds.
As for (ho good old patriots who
fell in that victorious struggle, their
names will live and be honored when
Mr. Greer’s is dead and gone. Be
cause lie is probate judge, or if ho
was a judge of tho supreme court,
that does not say lie lias any more
right to vote than any other man
who only pays poll tax. Now, I don’t
know him to he a man who only pays
.'1*1 (toll tax, but I have it on good
authority.
Xow, Mr. Editor, we are going to
get two to one, in spite of such argu
ments, at Surratt’ > box. Let us raise
our arms as free i en, with minds of
our own. and vote to suit ourselves.
Yours truly, .i. R. it.

Dkak Ledger :—Having accidently
got hold of one of your papers, I
am glad to see that a lively interest
is manifested hy the people in refer
ence to a new county. I see no rea
son why anybody should oppeso this
measure, as it would certainly he
beneficial to every one living within
its bounds, especially as the citizens
of Gaffney have already subscribed a
sufficient amount to build the court
house and jail, which the propose to
give without- cost to the tax payers of
the new county.
Some years ago I advocated the
formation of a new county, but the
people did not seem to ‘‘catch on”
to it then, and I am glad to see that
they are fully awakened to their in
terests at this time, and as I sec you
are to have Hon. Benjamin R. Till
man with you to speak on the sub
ject, I believe it wil be carried by
a large majority.
Being a tax-payer in the new
county, you may put me down in
favor of the now county, and I hope
that the (people will see that it is to
their interest to vote for it.
I am glad to see that your popula
tion is steadily increasing, and hope
that you will soon count double the
population you now have. It is with
pleasure that I note the present pros
perity of Gaffney.
I see that my young friend Tobe
Littlejohn is stil your postmaster.
Hope that the change in the admin
istration will not cause him to be dis
placed for another.
While we did not succeed in elect
ing our candidate for the Presidency,
I am glad to see that South Carolina
and Virginia did tlieir duty.
It is with pleasure that I note

(Correspondence of The Ledger )
Midway, S. C., Oct, 23, 18%.—As
I chanced to pass a crowd of country
girls not long ago. 1 heard one of
them make this remark. “Oh how I
do wish that I was a town lady. Dear
country girl will you listen to me
just a little while. If your lives
have fallen into some quiet unpre*
tention place do not complain, that
it is dull ami commonplace and that
there is nothing to live for here, as I
have heard so many do. Why dear
hearts there is no peace on God’s
1 earili so bleak and barren, so quiet
and lonely, so wind-swept and rain
beaten, hut that there is a gnat deal
to live for right there and when most
of you have grown a little older you
will soo it with clear eyes, and you
will look back to the country village
and wish, oh how you will wish! that
you had been happy and content in
that simple liie. You will know
then that it is nobler to live well a
humdrum life than to wear out body
and mind and soul in a fever of
gaiety and frivolity and to stretch out
yoiu empty hands always to some
thing you cannot seize. Better lo
sing babes to sleep in the soft
twilights that folddown over a cot

riages and laugh at tiio brainless
nonsense that men of the world whis

better to dwell forever away from
the lights and the roar and the temp

let the city’s passionate unrest creep
into your pulses and set them to
beating in a mad chase after death.
