merchant of Augusta regained posses
sion of about thirty thousand dollars)
worth of bonds a short time sfhee. In a
very peculiar manner. In 1804 this
merchant, then a resident of Nassau,
gsat tWBty thousand dollars-of 8tato
of Georgia bonds, issued in 18oG, lo
New York, to'be sold. When the box
in which the bonds had been packed
reached the metropolis, it was discov
ered that -it contained nothing but
brown paper. OV course the bonds
ha<l been abstracted en. route, but how
or when could not he ascertained.
Every » ff >rt was made for their recov
ery but in vain, and the owner finally
gave up tile search in despair. Nearly
twenty years had elapse l w-hen one
day inrreoelved in Augusta a mysteri
ous conirauuicatiou from Montreal in
which the writer stated that he knew
of the whereabouts of the missing
