lightly or ignorantly. In the meantime
the agitation has aroused French suscep
tibilities, and has given much offense to
M. de Leeseps. But M. de Leaaeps has
it in his power to out from under the
feet of the projectors most of thtjpround
they stand upon. The English Govern
ment owns nearly have the shares of the
existing Company, and English trade
supplies about eighty per cent of its
traffic. England, therefore, is beyond all
comparison the greatest shareholder,
and in a still more decided manner she is
the greatest customer. But, as a mat
ter of fact, she had had only three out of
twenty-four direotors on the board, and
does not participate at all in tb» admin
istration. , •-

is again Agitated. The dairy man is
pugnacious individual, Frank Ward by
name, who has built up a $100,000 dairy
business, and decline* to abate hi* gongs,

• for the l)enefit of a few nervous gentle
men in hi* neighborhood. There are
several bushels of accusations against
Mr. Ward describing him as a public
nuisance, but fmfortnnately for the nerv
ous gentlemen, besides alleging that the.
Alderney dairy kept the whole ward in
which it was situated in an uproar
fpr twenty-four- hours in the day,
seven days in the week and fifty-two
weekn hi the year, they aecnsed
Ward of not keeping his.premises dean.
Mr. Ward thereby hit back at them by
having first his own premises photo
graphed, and then their back yards,
from the roof* of houses and from holt's
in tbs broken-down fences. At present
there are forty lawyers engaged on either
side, and the victory promises to perch
on the banners of t he miJkmaQ.
A system of excursions to America
and back is attracting interest in the
German rapitat, -tb© route being by way
of "Liverpool. The inducement* hold
out in regard to the number of interest
ing sights to be seen in the New World
are flattering to this country. But there
seems to l>e no need of taking extra
pains to encourage the German move
ment to America, and perhaps it may bo
found that some who pay for the round
trip, having once got hersi will throw
up their return tickets, especially should
they have the prospect of compulsory
military service on arriving at home.

is duller hero at present than it has been
for several years. Every department of
labor is over full. *It is estimated that
there arc now 5,000 people in this city
out of employment, and this state of af
fairs applies to clerkships and such oocn-
pations as well as to the day laborers
that wield the ax and spado. It is quite
certain that the condition of things is
the result of toomanyyoung men taking
Grcolqy’s advice, supposing that posi
tions by the score at brown-stono front
salaries arc lying in waiting for them.
They crowd into Western cities with $4-
a day notes in their dyes, and are com-
pelled to have them removed by the pat
ent operation of $*2-a-day jobs, and even
those are hard to get. Many of the kid-
glove gentry come West expecting to
find the country full of “yaps” that they
can gnll at piormuro, forgetting, or never
knowing, that the shrewdest business
men in the United States are to l>e found
here. The consequence has'been a re
duction of wages slid an advance in the
_ cost Of living. The artificial boom has
subsided and a reaction has taken place.

“The snn was shining all day Friday,
and there was a stiff gale blowing from
the southwest. About six o’clock I no
ticed a funnel-shaped cloudy with the
small end uppermost, coming toward the
village from the northwest At the same
time a heavy rolling cloud came toward
us from the southwest Before the two
clouds met the gale suddenly stopped,
and there was a dead calm. The alouds
approached each other almost a mile
from where I was, and the conn-,
ter-currents rolled them over upon
one another backward and forward.
The funnel-shaped cloud tipped com
pletely over, and its small end swept
the ground. There was a suffocating
calm for a few moments after the clouds
collided. The collision was marked by a
clap at thunder and a glare of lightning.
Then omm a roaring wind, and I aaw
the big clond that had been formed by
the two sweep by. Its centre was of *
yellowish color, but the top and the aides
were jet black. It slanted downward
toward a pond, and I could see it swee; -
ing op and eairyiag maaaa* of mod acd
water. It lifted the fences straight into
the Air, and they aeemad to float into its
bosom rather than whirl around. I was
about a mile out of the cloud’s eouno,
but the strong wind struck me downward
to the earth. In half a minute the cloud
passed, and then the hot sun poured
down upon us brighter than evw.^ ‘
In Cars oonrrr, Mo., is a town with
nothing peculiar about it except its
name, which is Peculiar. Aooerding to
load tradition it earns to receive that
in the following
manner: When the settlement had be-
come sufficiently populous to need a
post office one of the prominent ci tisane
sent a petition to Washington to have a
post office estebliahed. In reply he was
asked to suggest a name that would
please the people, to which he responded
that “ the people were not particular so
long as the name was peculiar.” There
upon the post office wm christened. Pe
culiar end the name has never been
changed. *

Gazette has been investigating the habits
of ostriches on a ranch near that place,
and says that the old story about the
female covering up the eggs and then
leaving them to be hatched out by the
hot,suit ia all both. " The female,” he
says, “aita on the eggs in the daytime,
and the male assumes that duty at night,
allowing the female to seek rest and rec
reation while he attends to the house
hold duties. It must be noted here that
the male is much more solicitous for Ida
household than is the female. It not
unfroquently happens that the latter
prefer* to gad about rather than take her
turn at sitting, and on such occasions her
lord and master administers her a de
served chastisement by kidring bar
heartily around the paddock until she
manifests proper contrition and signifies
her willingness to ait down on the eggs.’
The eggs weigh about three and a.half
pounds apiece, and are said to be of not
unpleasant taste. One of them contains
food enough for a plentiful breakfast for
four persons.
A Georgia Man’s Revenge.
It was a bleak, raw pril day as we

have been kept down. A chap from
Quitman, Ga., who had lately pfeeled off
his flannels, and who felt as cold as a
sheared lamb, succeeded, after a while,
in getting all the windows down but one.

seat from the front, and the seat was oc
cupied by a fat man with a red face.
“Sir, won’t yon please lower that win
dow ?’’ asked the Georgian.
“What for?”

“ I have no objections to dust.”
Nothing further was said, but the
Georgian presently opened the stove

ing up the train entered a deep ent, and
the fat man was observed to bob off his

and blue and green. He swore he’d sue
the company, and he swore he’d kill the
engineer, and it was a good two honrs

monia among the cattle in this vicinity
is causing much uneasiness to dairymen-
and stockmen. Thus far only five oases
are positively known to have occurred,
all at a place called Banning’s Bridge, in
the suburbs of the city, but a number of
others hare been reported to the authori
